HBO’s hit medical drama The Pitt has taken the television world by storm. The show, which follows the chaotic 15-hour day shift at a Pittsburgh hospital, has earned critical praise and a loyal fanbase. One of the standout characters is Dr. Jack Abbot, the intense night shift attending physician played by Emmy winner Shawn Hatosy. Now, the actor is sharing his thoughts on a very popular fan idea: a spin-off focused entirely on the night shift crew.
With The Pitt currently airing its second season, viewers have gotten more time with the night team as they overlap with the day shift. The show’s unique format—where each episode covers one hour of a single shift—has people wondering what happens after the sun goes down.
Shawn Hatosy Teases a ‘Cool’ Night Shift Series
Shawn Hatosy spoke with People magazine about the growing calls for a night shift spin-off. The actor, who won an Emmy in 2025 for his role as Dr. Abbot, did not shut down the idea.
“There’s been a lot of talk about the night shift,” Hatosy told the outlet. “That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show.”
Hatosy believes that focusing on the nighttime hours would allow the creators to showcase different types of medical cases and explore unique character dynamics. He explained why his character chooses to work when most people are asleep.
“Dr. Abbot chose the night shift because it’s a certain kind of group of misfits that work together at night.” – Shawn Hatosy
The actor made it clear he loves the show’s current format. He said “everything is great” with how The Pitt runs now. But the possibility of expanding the world of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC) is exciting for him.
Dr. Abbot’s Season 2 Journey and Behind-the-Scenes Work
While Shawn Hatosy is open to a spin-off, his character’s role in The Pitt season 2 took an unexpected turn. Earlier reports suggested Abbot might work full-time in the emergency room this season. Instead, the writers showed him moonlighting with a SWAT team. This new gig takes him outside the hospital walls and leads to some dangerous situations.
Hatosy admitted he was confused when he first got the scripts.
“Then they came back to me to suggest that he’s in the E.R. in the middle of the season and I was like, what does that mean? Why am I coming in the middle? Am I dying? Am I coming in on a gurney?” the actor recalled.
Even though his on-screen time changed, Hatosy stayed deeply involved with season 2. Executive producer John Wells asked him to direct the first episode of the new season. Hatosy was nervous about acting and directing at the same time. He almost turned down the chance.
“I was like, I don’t know if I can do Abbot and be a director at the same time. And then I went home that night and thought, ‘Did I just talk myself out of a job?’ So I made sure to call him and say, ‘I didn’t mean that I don’t want to direct period.’ And then I think in season 2 somebody ended up not being able to do it, and I was able to step in,” he shared.

More Night Shift Characters Are Moving to the Front
The buzz around a potential spin-off is getting louder. The main show seems to be preparing to feature the night shift more heavily. Ayesha Harris, who plays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, was recently promoted to a series regular for season 3.
Harris celebrated the news on social media with a funny post. “Dr. ELLIS got student loans to pay off, we gotta work a double shift!” she wrote. She also thanked her co-star Supriya Ganesh, who is reportedly leaving the show after the season 2 finale.
These casting moves suggest that the world of The Pitt is growing. While not a spin-off yet, giving night shift characters bigger roles feels like a natural step. If fans keep asking for more, HBO might consider giving the night crew their own show.
The Legal History and Current Success of ‘The Pitt’
It is important to remember that The Pitt had a rocky road to the screen. Before the show even aired, the estate of Michael Crichton (the creator of ER) filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. The lawsuit claimed that The Pitt was just an unauthorized reboot of ER. Noah Wyle, who stars in The Pitt, played Dr. John Carter on ER for many years.
However, HBO and Max boss Casey Bloys was confident the show would move forward. He told reporters that the idea of one show owning the rights to hospital stories seemed “unrealistic.” The lawsuit did not stop the show’s release or its success.
The Pitt season 2 is currently airing new episodes every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO. Fans in the USA can also stream it on HBO Max. For viewers in the UK, episodes are available on Sky Atlantic and NOW. Audiences in Canada can watch on Crave, while fans in Australia can find it on Binge and Foxtel. Viewers in India can stream the series on JioCinema.
Hatosy also recently appeared in the horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. He continues to balance his busy film career with his role on The Pitt. Whether he is directing episodes or treating patients as Dr. Abbot, Shawn Hatosy remains a key part of this medical drama’s world.
