The director of Netflix’s hit action series Bloodhounds is opening up about the star power that helped make the second season a success. Kim Joo Hwan recently shared his deep appreciation for the actors who made special appearances in Bloodhounds Season 2, especially thanking top star Park Seo Joon for joining the project.
Season 2 of the popular K-drama dropped on Netflix on April 3, 2026. The show quickly climbed the streaming platform’s charts, reaching No. 5 on the Top 10 Most Watched list shortly after its release. The new season brings back leads Woo Do Hwan and Lee Sang Yi as boxers Gun Woo and Woo Jin, who now face a global underground boxing league run by a new villain played by K-pop icon Rain (Jung Ji Hoon).
Director Explains Why Cameo Roles Matter for the Story
Kim Joo Hwan did not just bring in famous faces for shock value. He carefully placed each cameo to serve the story and the characters fans already love. The director spoke about how certain roles needed actors with strong screen presence rather than long backstories.
“These were unique characters that had to be defined purely through the actors’ charisma and presence rather than extensive backstories. I’m grateful the three actors gladly joined the project.”
The director was talking about the trio of black agents appearing in Season 2. He explained that these parts required actors who could command attention without needing pages of explanation. The same thinking applied to Park Seo Joon’s role.
Park Seo Joon Makes a Surprise Appearance as NIS Agent
Park Seo Joon shows up in Bloodhounds Season 2 as Sin Hyeong, an agent with the National Intelligence Service (NIS). His character secretly connects with Mr. Hong (Min Beom) during the season. While Sin Hyeong’s role stays somewhat mysterious, the ending makes it clear he is looking into a major meth import operation. The mid-credits scene suggests his character could play a bigger part if the show continues.
This cameo marks another team-up between Park Seo Joon and director Kim Joo Hwan. The two previously worked together on the hit movies Midnight Runners (2017) and The Divine Fury (2019). Woo Do Hwan also starred in The Divine Fury, making Season 2 a kind of reunion for the three.
Full List of Special Appearances in Season 2
Park Seo Joon is not the only familiar face stopping by. Kim Joo Hwan brought in several other actors for surprise roles that caught viewers off guard. The cameo list includes:
- Ryu Soo Young – Returns as Doo Young, the right-hand man from Season 1 who comes back to fight alongside Gun Woo and Woo Jin as a comrade rather than a mentor
- Dex – A popular television personality making his acting cameo
- Lee Seol – Takes on a special appearance role
- Gong Myung – Another surprise face in the season
- Ha Young – Completes the lineup of guest stars
Ryu Soo Young’s Character Gets a Second Chance
Among the returning faces, Ryu Soo Young’s Doo Young has the most meaningful comeback. The character had been living away from others, carrying guilt for not protecting someone he loved. Director Kim Joo Hwan explained Doo Young’s journey in simpler terms.
“Doo Young has been living in seclusion with a sense of guilt for not being able to protect someone he loved, but he has always been ready to step in when needed. His role as someone who now fights alongside Gun Woo and Woo Jin as a comrade, rather than as a mentor, reflects their growth.”
This return gives longtime viewers a satisfying moment. Doo Young was a trusted senior in Season 1, and seeing him fight as an equal partner shows how much Gun Woo and Woo Jin have grown up.
Season 2 Brings Bigger Fights and Higher Stakes
The new season picks up three years after the events of Season 1. Woo Do Hwan put on 13kg of muscle to show Gun Woo’s growth as a boxer aiming for the world championship. Lee Sang Yi’s character Woo Jin steps into the role of Gun Woo’s coach, though he still steps back into the ring when needed.
The main villain this time is Baek Jeong, played by Rain. The K-pop star takes on his first-ever villain role in his 28-year career. Rain shared that he binge-watched all of Season 1 after randomly finding it on Netflix the day he moved houses. He said joining Season 2 felt like fate.
Director Kim Joo Hwan focused on making the boxing feel more real this season. Instead of adding more moves, the team dug deeper into authentic boxing techniques. The result is raw, intense fight scenes that stand out from typical action shows.
