BIGHIT MUSIC and BTS Members Seek Justice Over Alleged Defamation
BIGHIT MUSIC, alongside BTS’ V and Jungkook, has taken legal action against the controversial YouTuber Sojang, who is currently embroiled in a defamation lawsuit. The case, which has captured widespread attention, saw its first hearing on August 23, 2024, at the 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court.
Sojang’s Surprising Defense: Claims of Public Interest
During the trial, BIGHIT MUSIC’s legal team accused Sojang of producing and spreading false information about the two K-pop idols through her YouTube videos, which allegedly led to significant financial gain through slanderous content. The agency firmly stated, “We are filing a lawsuit for damages for false information and infringement of personal rights.”
However, in a surprising turn of events, Sojang denied all the accusations. Her legal team argued, “While we acknowledge the video production itself, considering the method and content, it is only just opinion and is not defamation by revealing false information.” They further asserted that the videos were made in the public interest and did not constitute a crime, as BIGHIT MUSIC claimed.
Sojang’s legal defense emphasized that her actions did not reach the level of infringing on the personal rights of V and Jungkook as alleged. This unexpected stance shocked many netizens, especially since this is not the only legal battle Sojang is facing concerning defamation claims against K-pop idols.
Netizens React: Criticism and Calls for Accountability
In various online communities, particularly on Instiz, fans expressed their frustration and disappointment with Sojang’s defense strategy. They criticized her for attempting to shift the blame to the public and called on her to take responsibility for her actions.
Previous Legal Actions: A History of Defamation Cases
This lawsuit is not an isolated incident for Sojang. In March 2024, V, Jungkook, and BIGHIT MUSIC filed a defamation lawsuit against the YouTuber, identified as person A, for creating and spreading malicious videos. The lawsuit seeks 90 million KRW in damages for defamation and obstruction of business.
This case follows an earlier complaint filed by BIGHIT MUSIC in 2022, which was initially suspended but later reopened due to HYBE’s persistent efforts. In addition to the ongoing lawsuit involving V and Jungkook, Sojang is also facing court proceedings for allegedly defaming other popular K-pop idols, including Kang Daniel, IVE’s Jang Wonyoung, and aespa.
