The Dutton Ranch premiere is finally here, and it throws Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler right back into the chaos they tried to escape. The first two episodes, which dropped on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026, show the couple leaving Montana after a devastating wildfire destroys their property. They move to Rio Paloma, Texas, to start fresh, but trouble follows them immediately.
The new land comes with a hidden corpse and a powerful enemy named Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening. Meanwhile, their adopted son Carter finds a local girl to like, but her family connections could destroy everything Beth and Rip are trying to build.
Why Rip Dumps the Body Instead of Calling the Police
The biggest shock in the first two episodes happens when Rip discovers a dead body on his new ranch. The dead man is Wes, a cowboy who worked for the Jackson family. Rob-Will Jackson, Beulah’s violent grandson, murders Wes in a fit of rage and buries him on what becomes the Dutton property.
Rip finds the body when he sees vultures circling over a patch of disturbed earth. Instead of telling Sheriff Wade or even telling Beth, Rip digs up the corpse in the middle of the night and dumps it down an abandoned mine shaft.
Cole Hauser, who plays Rip, explained why his character makes this dangerous choice. He told Radio Times that Rip wants to protect Beth from more stress.
“I kinda like it when he pokes her. But that secret is to protect Beth and to protect her peace. He didn’t want her to worry. He wanted her to enjoy the peace and the silence and the difference to what she experienced up in Montana.”
Hauser admitted he initially had issues with Rip keeping such a big secret from Beth. But after talking with showrunner Chad Feehan, he understood the reasoning. “It’s not a lie, it’s more Rip caring for her,” Hauser said.
The decision fits Rip’s character perfectly. On Yellowstone, he spent years disposing of enemies at the “Train Station” to protect the Dutton family. Old habits do not disappear just because he moved to Texas. But keeping this secret from Beth could backfire badly. She has already noticed him leaving their bed in the middle of the night.
Carter’s Romance with Oreana Brings the Jackson Family Too Close
While Rip handles the dead body, Carter faces a different kind of danger. Played by Finn Little, Carter is now a teenager struggling to fit in at a new Texas school. He goes to a local rodeo where he sees a girl named Oreana fighting with her boyfriend. When the boyfriend gets physical, Carter punches him and ends up arrested.
Oreana, played by Natalie Alyn Lind, bails Carter out of jail. The two quickly grow close, and Carter finally feels like someone understands him. Oreana is rebellious, comes from money, and seems to enjoy breaking rules. She convinces Carter to skip school and drink beer with her.
But the romance turns dangerous in the final moments of Episode 2. Viewers learn that Oreana is actually Rob-Will’s daughter and Beulah Jackson’s granddaughter. The family connection turns what looked like a harmless teenage crush into a major threat.
If Carter falls in love with a girl from the family already at war with Beth and Rip, he could become a weakness the Jacksons can exploit. Beth built her life on controlling everything around her, and Carter’s divided loyalty could force her to choose between protecting him emotionally and protecting the ranch.
Who Is Beulah Jackson and Why Is She Dangerous?
Beulah Jackson is the central villain of Dutton Ranch, and she brings a new kind of threat to the Duttons. Unlike the enemies Beth faced in Montana, Beulah is calm, calculated, and controls almost everything in Rio Paloma.
Her family runs the massive 10 Petal Ranch, which has dominated the local cattle market for years. Beulah wanted to buy the Edwards Ranch for a long time, so Beth outbidding her created an instant enemy. When Beth asks to use the 10 Petal slaughterhouse, Beulah refuses and demands a cut of the profits instead. Beth calls her an extortionist and walks out.
Rob-Will Jackson, played by Jai Courtney, is Beulah’s volatile grandson. He has a drug problem and a short temper. The murder of Wes is not his first mess. Beulah has already sent him to a rehabilitation facility twice before, but nothing changes.
Beulah’s adopted son Joaquin, played by Juan Pablo Raba, handles the family’s dirty business. After the murder, he tries to send Rob-Will away again and uses blackmail to keep Chet, a ranch hand who saw everything, quiet.

What Happens Next for Beth and Rip
Episode 2 ends with the Duttons still unaware of just how much danger surrounds them. Rip carries the secret of the dead body. Carter has no idea his new girlfriend is connected to the enemy. And Beth continues to poke at Beulah Jackson, unaware that the Jackson family already has reason to destroy her.
The local sheriff is also starting to ask questions about Wes’ disappearance. Whitney, another ranch hand, filed a report, and officials may eventually search the abandoned mine where Rip hid the body. If the body is found, all eyes will turn to the Duttons.
Ed Harris joins the cast as Everett McKinney, a local veterinarian who becomes Beth’s ally. He helps her find a slaughterhouse outside the Jackson family’s control and offers a friendly face in a town full of enemies. Marc Menchaca also appears as Zachariah, a cowboy with a criminal past who may work for Rip.
