Javier Bardem is scaring audiences worldwide in the new Apple TV series Cape Fear. But to get into the mind of the vengeful Max Cady, the Oscar-winning actor did not just rely on the script. He turned to heavy metal music, specifically songs by Linkin Park, Slipknot, Bad Omens, and Falling in Reverse.

The 57-year-old actor, known for his chilling roles in No Country for Old Men and Skyfall, recently revealed that these bands were the key to unlocking his character’s dark psychology. Bardem, a lifelong metal fan, explained that the music was not just background noise; it was a necessary part of his daily routine on set.

Why Linkin Park and Slipknot? The Songs That Set the Mood

Bardem specifically mentioned five songs that he listened to constantly during the filming of Cape Fear. He told Kerrang! magazine that two tracks by Linkin Park were especially important.

“I listened to five songs especially. Two from Linkin Park: ‘Given Up’ with the great [late] Chester [Bennington], and ‘Up From The Bottom’ from the last album, From Zero. I think [Emily Armstrong] is an amazing singer. She really brought it back. Those two songs really express frustration and the fight for raising up from [one’s] own ashes that [resonates] with Max.”

The actor also noted that he listened to songs by Slipknot, Bad Omens, and Falling in Reverse. While he admitted he is “so bad with the names of songs,” he said these tracks were “in my head all day long before doing anything and helped put me in the mood.”

Metal Is a Way of Life for Javier Bardem

For Bardem, this is not a new passion. He has been vocal about his love for heavy music for years, even crediting AC/DC with helping him learn English. He describes his connection to metal as a fundamental part of who he is, not just an acting tool.

“It’s not that I use the music, it’s that I can’t live without it. It’s what I listen to: when I drive, when I’m being driven, before I go to sleepโ€ฆ Yeah, I listen to Slipknot to go to sleep. For me, metal isโ€ฆ a way of living.”

He further explained that the genre gives him a sense of belonging. He enjoys the community at metal concerts, noting that fans are there for the music, not just to take photos. Bardem said, “And the older I get, the more I like it, and the less I like the other optionsโ€ฆ The thing that makes my heart beat is metal.”

Javier Bardem’s New Max Cady in the Cape Fear Series

The Cape Fear series is a modern take on the classic story, originally from the 1957 novel The Executioners. It follows Max Cady, a man released from prison after 17 years for a crime he did not commit, who seeks revenge on the married attorneys (played by Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson) he blames for his imprisonment.

Bardem knew the challenge of stepping into a role previously played by Robert De Niro and Robert Mitchum. To make the character his own, he changed his look with tattoos, scars, and blue contact lenses. Showrunner Nick Antosca said, “I knew Javier wasn’t going to do an imitation, he was going to bring something new to it.” The series, which has already earned strong reviews, premiered on June 5, 2026, with new episodes released weekly.
