Jo Bo-ah makes her acting comeback in the new Netflix series Dear Hongrang after her marriage and the delay of her Disney+ project Knock-Off due to Kim Soo-hyun’s controversy. The historical mystery drama premiered on May 16, showcasing her as a skeptical half-sister to Lee Jae-wook’s amnesiac heir.

The actress married a non-celebrity in October 2024 and was initially set to star in Knock-Off with Kim Soo-hyun. However, the Disney+ series faced indefinite suspension after Kim Soo-hyun’s alleged involvement in a privacy scandal linked to late actress Kim Sae-ron.

Jo Bo-ah Returns with Netflix Drama "Dear Hongrang" After Marriage

Dear Hongrang became Jo Bo-ah’s first project post-marriage. She plays Sim Jae-yi, a woman who doubts the identity of her long-lost brother Hongrang (Lee Jae-wook) when he returns with no memory. The drama blends mystery, romance, and political intrigue in the Joseon era.

Jo Bo-ah shared her thoughts on the role:

“While reading ‘Dear Hongrang,’ I wanted to express the heart of a sister longing for her brother Hongrang, which led me to take on this challenge. I put the most effort into distinctly separating Jae-yi’s feelings for the ‘real’ Hongrang and the unconscious attraction she feels toward the ‘fake’ Hongrang.”

The series is based on the web novel Tangeum: Swallowing Gold and follows Hongrang’s return to a wealthy merchant family after vanishing for 12 years. His reappearance sparks suspicion, especially from Jae-yi, who believes he might be an imposter.

Lee Jae-wook plays Hongrang, a man who lost his past and now navigates a household filled with secrets. Jung Ga-ram stars as Mu-jin, the adopted son who took Hongrang’s place, while Uhm Ji-won and Park Byung-eun play key family figures.

Jo Bo-ah praised her co-star, saying:

“Lee Jae-wook was sincere, passionate, and fully dedicated to his character. I really respected him and learned a lot from him while working together.”

The drama’s director, Kim Hong-sun, known for Voice and Money Heist: Korea, brings suspense and psychological depth to the story. The series explores themes of identity, betrayal, and hidden family conflicts.

Dear Hongrang released all 11 episodes on Netflix on May 16. Fans can stream it with subtitles in multiple languages. The show has already sparked discussions for its forbidden romance and intricate plot twists.
