The latest episode of the spring 2026 anime series The Ramparts of Ice (also known as Koori no Jouheki) continues to examine the tricky dynamics between a girl who likes being alone and a boy who cannot stop trying to “fix” her. Episode 3, which aired on April 15, 2026, shifts the focus from simple romantic comedy to a more uncomfortable look at how good intentions can feel like an invasion.

The episode shows Minato Amamiya trying harder to get close to Koyuki Hikawa, but she is not giving in. She keeps her distance, and for the first time, viewers see that Minato might not be the helpful guy he pretends to be. His actions start to feel less like kindness and more like a personal project.

Minato’s Helping Habit Looks More Like a Problem

Throughout Episode 3, Minato keeps asking Koyuki personal questions. He wants to know about her love life, her past, and why she will not open up to him. When she does not answer the way he wants, he gets frustrated. One review points out that Minato sees lonely people as something to be “unlocked,” almost like an emotional puzzle. He is not trying to be mean, but he turns other people’s struggles into his own mission.

The episode includes a scene where one of Minato’s friends says that Minato does not know what it is like to be sad. But when Minato hears this, his face shows real hurt. He is upset because Koyuki keeps her walls up around him, but she has let Youta get closer. This moment proves that Minato does feel things deeply, but he hides it behind his easygoing smile.

“Minato doesn’t necessarily hide the fact he’s feeling sad, but given the aloof attitude he tends to portray, people around him don’t typically take him seriously when he actually says it.”

The problem is that Minato does not know how to stop. He keeps pushing even when Koyuki looks uncomfortable. He asks for her phone number at a moment when she clearly wants to disappear. This behavior makes viewers question whether he actually cares about her or just wants to win.

Miki’s Past Explains Her Protective Behavior

Miki gets more screen time in this episode, and her backstory changes everything. Viewers learn that in middle school, Miki struggled to fit in. Other girls talked behind her back, and she felt completely alone. She decided to attend a cram school outside her city for a fresh start. When she got there, Minato approached her first.

At first, this seemed like a sweet story. But then Youta accidentally told Miki that Minato cannot help himself when he sees someone who looks lonely or pitiful. This information hit Miki hard. She started wondering if Minato only befriended her because he felt sorry for her. Now, when she sees Minato doing the same thing with Koyuki, she is not jealous. She is worried. She does not want Koyuki to go through the same confusing experience.

Miki asks Minato what he really thinks of Koyuki. She wants to know if his interest is real or just pity. The episode leaves his answer unclear, but Miki’s suspicious face says a lot.

Youta Shows That Real Connection Does Not Need Force

While Minato tries to break down Koyuki’s walls, Youta simply exists next to her without pressure. He does not ask personal questions. He does not analyze her. When Minato asks Koyuki if she is dating anyone, Youta steps in and tells Minato that is enough. He then tells Koyuki to just ignore Minato because he is always like this.

Youta’s approach works better because he respects boundaries. Koyuki feels safe around him because he does not treat her like a problem that needs fixing. One critic notes that Youta “doesn’t invade, doesn’t analyze, doesn’t turn interaction into a mission.” This contrast between the two boys is the main theme of Episode 3.

Koyuki’s Walls Are Not the Problem

The episode makes a strong case that Koyuki might not need to change at all. She has a routine. She has one good friend in Miki. She knows how to avoid people who hurt her in the past. When a teacher tells Koyuki to stop hanging around the office and go make friends, it feels less like helpful advice and more like the teacher just does not want to deal with her.

Koyuki’s behavior is not weird or broken. It is a survival strategy. She learned the hard way what happens when she trusts the wrong people. The episode mentions a character named Igarashi, who is connected to Koyuki’s past trauma. When Minato brings up this name, Koyuki completely shuts down. She cannot even hear what he is saying after that. This moment shows that her walls exist for a real reason.

Misunderstandings Build Up Between Everyone

Episode 3 creates a chain of wrong assumptions. Koyuki thinks Miki might like Minato, so she tries to stay away from him. Minato thinks Koyuki might like Youta, so he gets annoyed. Miki thinks Minato is only pretending to care, so she watches him closely. Youta is the only one not assuming anything.

These crossed signals make the episode feel tense. No one is being mean on purpose, but no one is talking honestly either. Koyuki would rather withdraw than ask Miki what is really going on. Minato would rather keep pushing than think about why he needs to save people. The episode ends with everyone stuck in their own head, and the situation is only getting more complicated.
