Billie Eilish fans in India faced a longer wait for her concert movie after the country’s film board asked to remove a hand gesture and a full song. May 13, 2026 reports confirm that Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour received a U/A 13+ certificate only after making multiple changes.
The concert film was set to hit Indian theaters on May 8, 2026, alongside other international markets. But the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) suggested edits that pushed the release back by nearly one week.
CBFC Removes Three-Second Gesture and Deletes Song
The CBFC’s Examining Committee asked for several specific changes before clearing the film. A three-second-long scene showing a foul hand gesture involving a skeleton was removed. The Indian version replaced it with a shot of a girl swinging on a rope.
A bigger change came in the form of a 2-minute-22-second song sequence. The board asked for this entire portion to be deleted from the Indian theatrical version.
Explicit words used during live performances and backstage moments were also muted or replaced. The changes reportedly required approval from Paramount Pictures headquarters in the United States before the revised cut could move forward.
The final certified version runs 112 minutes and 8 seconds long.
India Release Pushed to May 15
The certification process took longer than expected. The Indian team of Paramount Pictures had to contact the studio’s US office to get approval for the suggested edits. After the US team gave its nod, the makers decided to move the release date.
A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The CBFC’s Examining Committee asked for several cuts in the documentary. The Paramount Pictures team in India then decided to inform the US head office and seek approval on whether the changes suggested by the Censor Board could be made. The head office’s core team reviewed the suggested changes and gave its nod.”
The film is now scheduled to release in India on May 15, 2026. It will be available in standard, IMAX, and 3D formats across the country.
Other Countries Gave Parental Guidance Ratings
Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour has already received clearances in several major markets. The United Kingdom gave it a 12A rating, while the United States issued a PG-13 certificate. Canada and Australia also placed it in the ‘Parental Guidance’ category.
The British Board of Film Classification noted that the film contains frequent strong language, including the word ‘f**k,’ along with moderate sex references and suggestive gestures. The documentary also touches on mature subjects like bullying and mental health.

James Cameron Co-Directed the Concert Film
The project marks an unusual collaboration. James Cameron, the director behind Titanic and Avatar, co-directed the concert movie alongside Billie Eilish. This is Eilish’s third concert film and her first time working with Cameron.
The movie captures footage from Eilish’s sold-out world tour, including a four-night residency in Manchester. The filmmakers used advanced 3D and IMAX technology to create an immersive big-screen experience.
Despite the censorship, insiders say the film’s overall impact remains unchanged. The edited version still delivers the experience the makers intended for Indian audiences.
