Episode 1: The Stranger in the Woods

The first episode opens inside the Fellowship of the Divine. The leader, Mr. Phillips (Christopher Eccleston), preaches to the group. Outside, Rosie and her husband Adam (Asa Butterfield) check on their young daughter Grace (Olivia Pickering), who is hard of hearing and uses a device.

A big storm hits the area. Grace gets scared and thinks it is the end of the world. She runs into the nearby woods. Rosie disobeys Mr. Phillips by leaving the meeting to search for her daughter. The cult leader says finding Grace is “men’s work” and orders Rosie to stay inside. She ignores him.

Rosie finds Grace trapped in the water. A stranger jumps in and pulls Grace out. The man, who we later learn is Sam Devlin (Fra Fee), saves her life. But then he disappears before anyone can thank him.

Grace needs to go to the hospital. Isaac (Aston McAuley), Adam’s brother, uses a hidden mobile phone to call for help. This breaks the cult’s rules because the Fellowship sees phones as “unclean technology” that opens a “pipeline of pornography” to their souls.

Later, Adam stands up during a church gathering. He tells everyone about Isaac’s phone. Mr. Phillips calls the phone an “instrument of the devil.” The cult locks Isaac in a room away from his wife Hannah (Alexa Davies) and his children. Rosie questions Adam about betraying his own brother. Adam says he had no choice.

The episode ends with Sam showing up at Rosie’s house. His hand is badly cut. He says he cannot go to the hospital and needs help. Rosie cleans his wound and gives him food. But Sam does not leave. Rosie hides him in a shed outside. A news report at the hospital reveals Sam escaped from prison while on day release. The report says he got into a fight and may have killed another prisoner.

Episode 2: Forbidden Help and Escape

The second episode starts with Rosie having bad dreams about getting caught. Hannah goes into labor with her new baby. While helping with the birth, Rosie feels pulled in different directions.

Grace goes to the shed to get eggs. Sam talks to her and makes a small doll from hay. He gives it to her. Grace tells Rosie about the man. Rosie quickly changes the subject when Adam walks in.

Mr. Phillips tells Adam that a church elder is leaving. He offers Adam the leadership role. Adam must prove himself to God first. The ceremony to “cleanse” Isaac begins. The men force Isaac to drink alcohol. They chant “repent” over and over. Anthony, Isaac’s young son, spits on his father and calls him the devil.

Rosie becomes very upset watching this. She goes to check the shed, but Sam is gone. He has moved to a new hiding spot inside the main house.

Mr. Phillips finds Rosie alone. He touches her in a wrong way. Adam sees this happen but does nothing. Rosie pushes Mr. Phillips away and leaves.

Isaac begs Rosie to help him escape that night. He cannot stay in the cult any longer. Rosie agrees. She sneaks Adam’s car keys and drives Isaac out of the community. They go to the house of Charley (Niccy Lin), the woman Isaac truly loves.

On the drive back, Sam jumps out from the back of the car. He has been hiding there the whole time. Police vehicles appear. Sam tells Rosie to drive away. She refuses to leave without Grace. Sam agrees to take her back.

Sam tells Rosie about his past. He went to prison at age 16. His younger brother Mason (Ethan Davidson) is the only person who ever cared about him. The episode ends with Adam finding Rosie and Sam sitting together in the car.

Episode 3: Punishment and New Plans

The third episode shows the results of Rosie’s actions. Hannah tells Adam that Rosie helped Isaac escape. Adam punishes Rosie by separating her from Grace. Hannah takes Grace to live with her.

Rosie tries to check on Grace at school. The teachers say Grace is hiding under a table and refusing to come out. Rosie calms her daughter down. Hannah sends Rosie home alone.

Isaac runs into Rosie outside. He asks her to give a letter to his son Anthony. Rosie says no and walks away. But the school’s CCTV camera records them talking. Adam sees the video later and gets very angry.

Back at the Phillips house, Rosie hears Mr. and Mrs. Phillips arguing. Mrs. Phillips (Siobhan Finneran) asks why her husband cannot keep his hands off Rosie. Mr. Phillips gets physical with his wife. Rosie steps in to stop him and gets hurt herself.

Mrs. Phillips covers Rosie’s bruise with makeup. She blames her husband’s actions on drinking. She asks Rosie to keep it a secret. Rosie uses this information as a bargaining tool. She asks Mr. Phillips to help Sam get a job and a place to live.

Adam confronts Rosie about the CCTV footage. He forces himself on her sexually. The camera stays on Rosie’s face during this scene, showing her pain and shock.

Later, Rosie goes to the sawmill to get money and her passport. She plans to escape with Grace. Sam finds her there. He learns what Adam did and promises to help Rosie leave. But he says they need more money first.

Sam finds hidden letters in an outhouse. The letters show that Mrs. Phillips is still in contact with her son Matthew. The cult had cut him off completely. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips have been hiding this secret.

Rosie sleeps with Sam. She looks happy for the first time in the series. Sam tells her he is getting baptized and joining the Fellowship. This shocks Rosie. The episode ends with Isaac watching a news report. He sees Sam’s face on the screen. The report identifies Sam as an escaped prisoner who is still on the run.

Episode 4: Police Arrive and A Deadly Crash

The fourth episode raises the danger level for everyone. A police officer comes to the Fellowship looking for Sam. He asks Rosie if she has seen the escaped prisoner. Rosie lies and says no.

She runs to the sawmill to warn Adam. She begs him to hide Sam. Adam lies to the police officer too. But Adam starts asking questions about what Sam did. Rosie defends Sam, saying he is now one of them.

Isaac is the person who told the police about Sam. Sam learns this and gets very worried.

Mr. Phillips’ drinking problem gets worse. His wife worries about him. Mr. Phillips takes Sam to the church. He gives Sam new clothes and a Bible. While there, Sam steals Isaac’s old phone from a box of confiscated items.

Sam goes through his first church ceremony. An older church member named Mrs. Dawson lies on her deathbed. Adam and Mr. Phillips are asked to pray for her. Adam refuses to continue. He has too many doubts about Sam in his head.

Sam asks Rosie to leave Adam and start a new life with him. Rosie says she cannot. Inside their community, women do not have the right to ask for a divorce. She feels trapped.

Later that night, Sam goes back to the sawmill. He finds Adam alone near a fire. Sam leaves Isaac’s phone inside his car, with the video recording on. He approaches Adam. The two men share an intimate moment. The phone records everything that happens.

At the same time, Mr. Phillips shows up drunk at the sawmill. He yells at Adam in front of a client. Sam steps in and removes Mr. Phillips from the building.

Rosie starts to doubt Sam. She calls Isaac and asks to meet him at a park. She asks Mrs. Phillips to take her and Grace there. Isaac agrees to come.

Sam finds out Rosie left with Grace. He starts chasing Isaac’s car. During the chase, Sam forces Isaac off the road. The car flips over. Isaac dies in the crash. Sam finds Mr. Phillips, who is unconscious. He puts the older man in the driver’s seat and runs away. The episode ends with Isaac dead and Sam gone.

What Makes Unchosen Different

The show has a strong cast. Asa Butterfield, known for his role in Sex Education, plays Adam. He moves from playing a funny teen to a controlling husband. Molly Windsor carries the emotional weight of the series as Rosie. Fra Fee plays Sam as both charming and dangerous.

The series looks at how cults control people. The Fellowship uses fear, isolation, and strict rules to keep members in line. Women must obey their husbands. Children must report their parents’ sins. Anyone who breaks the rules gets cut off from their family.

But the show moves very fast. Some critics say the characters change too quickly. One review called the series “as dull as ditchwater” despite the talented cast. Another review gave the first episode a 6 out of 10, saying it was slow but still interesting.

The show has clear trigger warnings for sexual assault. Episode 3 shows Adam forcing himself on Rosie. The camera stays on her face, making the scene very hard to watch.

Unchosen streams globally on Netflix. All six episodes are available now. Episode lengths range from 42 to 49 minutes. The show was created by Julie Gearey, who said she got the idea after meeting a woman from a cult at a grocery store.
