The sequel to the 2007 cult classic Awarapan has arrived in cinemas today, August 14, 2026. But one question has been on everyone’s mind: why didn’t Mohit Suri, the director of the original film, return to direct Awarapan 2? Producer Vishesh Bhatt has now given a clear answer, explaining that the decision was not about replacing Suri but about letting the story grow in its own way.
The new film, which brings back Emraan Hashmi as the troubled character Shivam Pandit, is now playing in theatres worldwide. It is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt under the Vishesh Films banner. While the original Awarapan was directed by Mohit Suri, the sequel has a new director at the helm.
Producer Reveals the Real Reason Behind Mohit Suri’s Absence
Vishesh Bhatt spoke exclusively about why Mohit Suri did not return for Awarapan 2. He made it clear that there was no conflict or creative disagreement between them. Instead, the decision happened naturally over time.
Bhatt explained that he had already been working on the sequel’s story for a while. At the same time, Mohit Suri was busy with another project. There was no urgent story that Suri wanted to tell, so Bhatt moved forward with the sequel on his own.
“I was part of Jannat 1, and very quickly Jannat 2 was being made. I had given my heart and soul to it, so I said, ‘I don’t want to.’ I was part of other films in the producing capacity, but I was not up for doing it again,” Bhatt said. He added that the same thing happened with Awarapan 2. “So, it just came out organically. I think the timing was an important part of that,” he explained.
What Mohit Suri Said About Not Directing the Sequel
Mohit Suri himself has spoken about his absence from Awarapan 2. His explanation was simple and direct. He said he was never actually offered the chance to direct the sequel.
“I was never actually offered it before, that’s all. I think they wanted to work,” Suri told the media. This clears up any confusion about whether he turned down the project or was replaced. The sequel simply moved forward with a different director.
Even though he is not directing, Mohit Suri has shown full support for the team behind Awarapan 2. He called the film a “long-lost love” and an “old friend”. He shared the film’s trailer on Instagram and wrote a long note expressing his emotions.
“This one feels special. Like a long-lost love, like an old friend you haven’t met in years but still deeply miss. 19 years later, and this movie still matters so much to me,” Suri wrote.
He also praised Emraan Hashmi, calling him his hero. “Emi, my hero — and always, always will be. I’m sure you have given this one your all, like you did to me 18 years back,” Suri said.

“I am a big fan of the first part and this is a dream come true. I had seen it in school and was really fascinated by it, Emraan’s performance, the storytelling and the songs,” Siddiqui said.
Vishesh Bhatt was clear that Shivam had to remain at the centre of the narrative. “Vishesh was clear that he wanted to take Shivam ahead as a character, since he is what makes Awarapan work. We didn’t want to just patch on any story to the title and call it ‘Awarapan 2’,” Siddiqui explained.

Awarapan 2 brings together familiar faces and new additions. Emraan Hashmi returns as Shivam Pandit. Disha Patani joins the cast as Zara in an action-heavy role. Veteran actor Shabana Azmi plays the antagonist Nafisa. Suvinder Vicky also features in the film as Jaideep. Other cast members include Vijayant Kohli, Atul Kumar, Aniruddh Rawal, and Puran Gabbi.
Producer Vishesh Bhatt said the team wanted to expand the franchise’s universe. “We like introducing people also. So, wherever we got a chance, we did it,” Bhatt said.

The music of Awarapan 2 combines familiar names with newer voices. Mithoon, who worked on the original film, returns for the sequel. Amaal Mallik has also contributed to the soundtrack. Arijit Singh continues his association with the franchise while newer singers have also been brought in.
Bhatt explained the thinking behind the music choices. “In some parts, me and Emraan discussed it. I said, ‘This is there, but in some parts, let’s have newer people interpret the material also. I think Mithoon’s interpretation of the songs is beautiful,” Bhatt said.
The mix of experienced and new talent has helped make the Awarapan universe larger. Bhatt said the idea was to keep collaborators they trust while adding more shades to the creative canvas.
