Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming two-part film Ramayana has been making headlines for its massive reported budget of Rs 4000 crore. The figure, which makes it the most expensive Indian film ever made, has sparked both excitement and questions about whether such a huge investment can be recovered. Now, Yash, who plays Ravana and also serves as a co-producer, has come forward to clear the confusion.
Appearing on Aap Ki Adalat with host Rajat Sharma, the KGF star explained what the Rs 4000 crore figure actually means and why the makers are not worried about the box office. He said the amount is not just the production cost of the first part but covers both films along with their release and promotional expenses.
Yash Clarifies the Real Meaning of the Rs 4000 Crore Budget
During the interview, Rajat Sharma asked Yash about the scale of Ramayana and how it differs from his previous work, pointing to the Rs 4000 crore budget. Yash responded by calling it a “misconception” and gave a clear breakdown.
“That is a misconception, so let me clarify it to everyone. Rs 4000 crore is the budget for the two-part film, including release and promotion,” Yash said.
He explained that the approach follows what he described as “Hollywood math.” In Hollywood, studios often spend as much on marketing and worldwide distribution as they do on making the film, sometimes even more. The reason is simple – these films are designed for a global audience, and the revenue comes from all over the world.
“It is the same as Hollywood. Our partner (Namit) said this after including all that. The math there is like this. A budget equal to the film, or sometimes more, they spend on promotion because it is global. But the revenue is global too,” Yash added.
Why the Makers Are Not Worried About Box Office Recovery
Many trade experts have expressed concern that a Rs 4000 crore budget might be too risky for an Indian film. But Yash made it clear that the makers are thinking beyond the domestic market. He said the investment is necessary if Indian cinema wants to compete on a global level.
Yash described cinema as a “soft power” and said that filmmakers must work hard to take Indian stories to international audiences. He added that Ramayana and his other upcoming film Toxic are both attempts to position Indian cinema as global cinema.
“Cinema is a soft power. All of us have to work really hard towards it. Whatever happens, we will work hard and do our job properly. If not today, then tomorrow we’ll make it happen. If we don’t, someone else will – but it should happen. That is what I feel. Both Ramayana and Toxic are attempts to position Indian cinema as global films,” Yash said.
Yash on Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Sunny Deol as Hanuman
During the same conversation, Yash was also asked about the casting choices, particularly Ranbir Kapoor playing Lord Rama and Sunny Deol portraying Lord Hanuman. When Rajat Sharma pointed out that Yash himself is playing Ravana, the antagonist, Yash gave a simple response.
“That’s a story. We do the characters,” Yash said.
He also spoke about why Sunny Deol was chosen for the role of Hanuman. Yash mentioned that Hanuman is from Karnataka, and every actor brings their own values to the film.
“He will play Bajrangbali. You know, Hanumanji is from Karnataka, sir. Every actor brings their own values in the film,” Yash said in Hindi.
What to Expect from Ramayana Part One
Ramayana is being directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus Studios. The film features a star-studded cast including Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, along with Ravie Dubey, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, and Kunal Kapoor.
The first part is scheduled for a worldwide release on November 6, 2026, just ahead of Diwali. The second part is expected to release in Diwali 2027.

Before Ramayana hits theaters, Yash will be seen in Geetu Mohandas’ gangster drama Toxic, which also stars Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth, and Huma Qureshi. The film is set to release on August 26, 2026.
