Netflix’s war drama Operation Safed Sagar has been grabbing attention since its August 7 premiere. The six-part series, which tells the story of the Indian Air Force’s role in the 1999 Kargil War, has earned praise for its storytelling and action sequences. But there is one detail that has caught viewers by surprise. Every single episode ends with a special thank-you note to late comedian Raju Srivastava.
The tribute is not random. For the people who made the show, it is deeply personal.
Raju Srivastava Was Family to the Show’s Creator
Kushal Srivastava, one of the co-creators of Operation Safed Sagar, is Raju Srivastava’s nephew. The late comedian was not just a famous face on television. He was a family member who played a big role in Kushal’s life and career.
Kushal spent seven years serving in the Indian Air Force. He joined in December 1999, right after the Kargil War ended. But he always had a dream of making films. He had grown up visiting his uncle Raju on comedy and film sets. Those early experiences gave him a close look at how stories are told and sparked his interest in filmmaking.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
Kushal shared a story about a conversation he had with his uncle years ago. He told Raju that he wanted to do something big, something that would make the whole world know his name.
“Years ago, when I told my chacha that I wanted to do something so that the whole world knows my name, he joked that I should install hand pumps everywhere with my name on them. But when he realised I was serious about joining the film industry, he helped me secure permission to leave the Indian Air Force.”
Raju took his nephew’s dream seriously. He used his connections to help Kushal get the official permission he needed to leave the Air Force. Kushal left the service in 2016 and moved to Mumbai. He stayed with Raju while he studied filmmaking.
Raju Was Kushal’s First Teacher in Storytelling
For Kushal, Raju was not just an uncle who helped him with paperwork. He was his first real teacher when it came to understanding stories.
Raju would read Kushal’s scripts and share his thoughts. He helped Kushal understand how to tell a story better. Kushal said that Raju was the family’s first entertainer. The family would see Raju’s jokes and acts before they reached audiences.
Kushal’s first film, Vodka Diaries (2018), also carried a special mention for Raju Srivastava. The pattern of honoring his uncle continued with Operation Safed Sagar.
The Project That Raju Knew About
Operation Safed Sagar did not start as a Netflix series. It was first planned as a feature film. Kushal started developing the project in 2018, working alongside Raju’s daughter, Antara Srivastava, who is also an associate director on the series.
The early research for the project was done from Raju’s office. The team slowly built the project there. Raju also helped the team navigate the process of getting permissions from various ministries. He had connections with politicians and government officials, which made the process smoother.
The team had locked the script and cast when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Their plans were put on hold. Later, they decided to turn the film into a series. Around May 2022, Netflix gave the project the green light.
A Loss During Production
Just months after Netflix approved the series, the family faced a heartbreaking loss. Raju Srivastava passed away in September 2022 at the age of 58 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
For Antara, the series carries a meaning that goes far beyond her work on it. She said her father was aware of the series and described it as the last project he knew about before his death.
“This was the last project Papa knew about. This is a family show for us as our family has gone through a lot while making it.”
The project went through several changes before finally making it to the screen. But for Kushal and Antara, it remained deeply personal.
More Than Just a Credit
The thank-you note at the end of every episode of Operation Safed Sagar is not just a formality. It reflects Raju’s role in encouraging Kushal’s career change and his connection to a project that stayed close to the family even after he was gone.
For Kushal, the series is a tribute to the family member who supported him from the beginning.
“Raju sir is the elder of our family and, from my side, this series is a tribute to him.”
