20th Century Studios has released the official trailer for Whalefall, a survival thriller that puts Austin Abrams inside the belly of a massive sperm whale. The movie, based on Daniel Kraus‘s acclaimed novel, follows a young diver who gets swallowed alive while searching for his father’s remains. The trailer, which dropped on August 19, 2026, gives audiences a close look at the claustrophobic nightmare that awaits Jay Gardiner (Abrams) when his deep-sea dive goes horribly wrong.
Josh Brolin co-stars as Jay’s late father, whose lessons become the only hope for survival. The film also features Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd in supporting roles. Whalefall arrives exclusively in theaters on October 16, 2026.
Trailer Shows the Nightmare Inside the Whale
The new Whalefall trailer runs through the terrifying moments after Abrams’ character gets swallowed. Viewers see Jay trapped in total darkness, with only his scuba lamp providing light. His oxygen supply is running out, and he has just one hour to find a way out.
The trailer opens with Jay preparing for a dive off California’s Central Coast. He is looking for his father’s remains, a man who died at sea and was never recovered. During the dive, a giant squid attacks him. As Jay tries to escape, a sperm whale chasing the squid emerges from the darkness. Both Jay and the squid get caught in the chaos and are swallowed together.
Inside the whale’s stomach, Jay fights to stay calm. His father’s voice echoes in his mind, reminding him of lessons taught years ago. “You’re just going to accept your fate?” his father asks in the trailer. Jay responds by fighting back, using every skill his father gave him.
The trailer also shows the whale diving deeper into the ocean, increasing the pressure and making escape even harder. Every breath counts as Jay waits for his next chance to survive.
Based on a Critically Acclaimed Novel
Whalefall comes from the pages of Daniel Kraus‘s novel, which received widespread praise upon its release in 2023. The book was named one of the “Best Thrillers of 2023” by the New York Times. Kraus co-wrote the screenplay with director Brian Duffield.
The story draws clear parallels to the biblical tale of Jonah and the whale, but with a modern, gritty twist. Kraus’s novel explores not just survival, but the complicated relationship between a father and son. Jay carries guilt and unresolved feelings about his father, and those emotions become central to his fight for life.
20th Century Studios acquired the rights to Whalefall after a competitive bidding war in 2024. The studio partnered with Imagine Entertainment to bring the project to the screen.
Brian Duffield Brings the Whale to Life on a Soundstage
Director Brian Duffield, known for No One Will Save You and the screenplay for Underwater, took on the challenge of adapting Kraus’s novel. Rather than shooting in the open ocean, Duffield and his team built the whale from the inside out on a soundstage in Studio City, California.
“To bring Daniel Kraus’ book to life, our cast and crew spent a summer inside a whale inside a sound stage in Studio City, California. I can’t wait for audiences to see the performances and hard work everyone put in to tell this thrilling and emotional story in a dark, cozy theater this October.”
Duffield’s experience with underwater survival films made him a natural fit for the project. He previously wrote Underwater, the 2020 sci-fi thriller starring Kristen Stewart. That film also dealt with claustrophobic conditions deep beneath the ocean’s surface.
The director is also working with Zach Cregger on a new project called Siren Head at Warner Bros. Cregger directed Abrams in last year’s horror hit Weapons, which earned Abrams critical recognition.
Austin Abrams Faces His Most Challenging Role Yet
Austin Abrams has been building momentum in Hollywood for years, with roles in Euphoria, Dash & Lily, and The Walking Dead. But 2026 is shaping up to be his biggest year yet.
Abrams stars in Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, which arrives in September. Then comes Whalefall in October, putting him in two major studio films within weeks of each other.
In Whalefall, Abrams plays Jay Gardiner, a young man carrying the weight of his father’s death. The role requires him to convey fear, determination, and emotional vulnerability while trapped in a dark, confined space. The trailer shows Abrams delivering a performance that balances physical exhaustion with raw emotion.
Abrams and Brolin previously appeared together in Weapons, but their characters in Whalefall share a much deeper connection. Brolin plays Jay’s father, a man whose memory haunts his son throughout the ordeal.
Josh Brolin Leads a Strong Supporting Cast
Josh Brolin, known for Avengers: Endgame and Dune, brings gravitas to the role of Jay’s father. Though his character has died before the events of the film, his presence is felt throughout. His voice guides Jay from the grave, offering the lessons that may save his life.
The supporting cast includes several well-known actors. Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd round out the ensemble. Each brings their own experience to the film, adding depth to the world beyond Jay’s desperate struggle.
Brian Grazer produces the film alongside Duffield, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum. Doug Merrifield, Richard Abate, and Will Rowbotham serve as executive producers.
The Poster Adds to the Growing Excitement
Alongside the trailer, 20th Century Studios released a new poster for Whalefall. The image shows Jay swimming toward the surface, with a massive sperm whale rising from the depths below him. The poster captures the fear and isolation at the heart of the story.
The film has been described as The Martian meets 127 Hours, combining survival ingenuity with extreme physical limitation. Fans of claustrophobic thrillers and deep-sea horror have already started talking about the movie online.

What to Expect from Whalefall
Whalefall promises a tense, immersive experience that puts audiences inside the whale alongside Jay. The trailer shows the film’s visual style, which uses bioluminescent effects similar to Avatar: The Way of Water. The dark, confined spaces inside the whale create a feeling of dread that builds throughout the preview.
The film’s premise is simple but effective. A man with one hour of oxygen, trapped inside a whale, must use his father’s teachings to escape. The trailer suggests that Jay is not alone inside the whale, as the squid that was swallowed with him adds another layer of danger.
Whalefall opens exclusively in theaters on October 16, 2026. The film will be available in theaters across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other global markets.
