Meghan McCain did not hold back when she heard that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning to move back to the United Kingdom. The conservative commentator took to X on Wednesday, August 19, and called the couple “D-list royals.” She made it clear that she will not miss them and said Americans do not care about them.
McCain, 41, wrote a series of posts that quickly grabbed attention. She said Americans can see through “bulls***” and do not like “entitled grifters.” She added that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “could never hack it here” and that “truly no one gives a s*** about d list royals.”
She also had a message for people in the UK. McCain tweeted, “Good luck to our friends in the UK, they’re your problem now.”
The strong words came after reports surfaced that Harry and Meghan are planning to relocate from California to the UK. The couple stepped down as working royals six years ago. They now plan to move back so their children can attend school there starting in September.
McCain’s History of Criticizing the Sussexes
This is not the first time Meghan McCain has spoken against Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. She has been a regular critic of the couple since they started their production deal with Netflix and launched Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever.
When the trailer for Meghan’s Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, came out in January 2025, McCain dismissed it. She called the show “highly curated, produced and out of touch.” She also said she would have told Meghan to do a show about helping low-income neighborhoods with fresh food and desserts. “Do something to help people instead of your ego,” McCain tweeted at the time.
During a February 2025 episode of her digital series, Meghan McCain’s Happy Hour, she was even more direct. “I cannot stand her,” McCain declared. “I love people that I can relate to, like every other 40-year-old mom. I don’t want to eat her jam. I love Princess Kate [Middleton].”
Other Critics Speak Out on the Royal Move
Meghan McCain was not alone in reacting to the news. Piers Morgan, who has a long history of criticizing Meghan Markle, also shared his thoughts on X. He first posted a hand-on-face emoji. Then he wrote, “May have to emigrate to the U.S.”
Morgan left his role on Good Morning Britain in 2021 after he questioned Meghan’s claims about suicidal thoughts during her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
British columnist Allison Pearson also questioned the move. She wrote, “Ye gods. Who wants Harry and Meghan back in the U.K.? How is it supposed to work?” She asked if they would make “quasi-Royal visits” that would undermine the Prince and Princess of Wales, who she said “cordially loathe them.”
Pearson also brought up the couple’s past criticism of the UK. “What happened to Britain being a ghastly, racist country Madam couldn’t stand living in?” she wrote. “Are they expecting to spend Christmas at Sandringham, welcomed back into the bosom of the family they trashed? That will work well.”
Kelvin MacKenzie, an English media executive, speculated that the couple’s money from Netflix may have run out. He suggested that “all the pots of money (Netflix, etc.) have been drained in the U.S. and therefore Harry and Meghan sought pastures.”
The Sussexes originally signed a $100 million deal with Netflix. That deal has since been scaled down to a first-look agreement.
What We Know About the UK Move
According to reports from People and CNN, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning to move back to the UK this month. The couple will keep their home in Montecito, California, but they will also have a non-royal residence in the UK.
Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are set to start school in the UK in September.
The couple’s status as private members of the royal family is not expected to change after the move.
Royal Expert Predicts Chaos
Royal author Christopher Andersen spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about the move. He said Harry and Meghan’s return is likely to cause chaos within the royal family. “All I can think of is: here we go again,” Andersen said.
Royal reporter Tom Sykes also shared his concerns with Page Six. He called the move “a huge slap in the face for William” and said it creates “serious risks for the monarchy.”
Sykes questioned what would happen if King Charles invites Harry to royal events like Christmas or Remembrance Day celebrations. He said there is “no way” the King did not know about the move. A source confirmed to Page Six that the monarch learned of the couple’s plans on Sunday.
Sykes also said, “There’s no way that the late Queen Elizabeth II would’ve allowed this to happen.” He called it “a very very dangerous situation” that Charles “allowed himself to be manipulated into welcoming them home.”
Despite the criticism, Sykes acknowledged that this is a big moment for the couple and their children. He said he suspected “something was afoot” but never imagined it would happen so quickly.
