Jack Coleman, who played Noah Bennet on the hit NBC series Heroes, has shared a touching tribute to his on-screen daughter Hayden Panettiere following her sudden death at age 36. The actor took to Instagram to express his grief and remember the young actress who portrayed Claire Bennet from 2006 to 2010.
In his emotional post, Coleman revealed a special moment from the set that showed just how gifted Panettiere was as an actress. During an early scene, he watched in amazement as a tear rolled down her cheek on the same line, take after take. He was impressed by what he thought was a perfected crying technique.
But Panettiere, who was only 16 at the time, quickly corrected him. She told him she did not use any special method to produce tears. Her response showed that her talent came from a much deeper place.
“It’s not technique. I’m not a trained seal. I feel it and the tears just happen to come at that moment.”
The Real Secret Behind Her Emotional Scenes
Panettiere never relied on acting tricks to deliver emotional performances. Instead of forcing tears on command, she connected with the character’s feelings and let the emotions flow naturally. This approach made her crying scenes feel real and moved audiences around the world.
Her ability to cry naturally at the exact same moment during multiple takes impressed everyone on set. Coleman called her a “prodigious talent” and admired how she brought authenticity to every scene.
The bond between Coleman and Panettiere started from their very first meeting on the Heroes pilot 20 years ago. She introduced herself by shouting “daddy” and throwing her arms around him. From that day forward, she called him “daddio,” and he called her “Haydini” because she was like a magician.
Growing Up in the Spotlight
Coleman also spoke about the intense pressure Panettiere faced as a young star. By age 17, she had reached the number one spot on IMDb Pro’s STARmeter ranking. But with fame came unwanted attention from the media and paparazzi.
She was regularly asked inappropriate questions, often some version of “when are you going to go off the rails?” Coleman pointed out that today, people would recognize those questions for what they really were – misogynistic provocations.
The actor described how Panettiere was “hunted” by photographers everywhere she went. They used 300 millimeter lenses that could make even the most innocent activity look sinister. Once, when she visited Coleman’s house, paparazzi hid in the bushes behind his yard and drove onto neighbors’ lawns.
“They were predatory. No one, especially a teenager, should be targeted that way.”

A Bright Light on Set
Despite the difficulties she faced outside of work, Panettiere brought joy to the Heroes set. Coleman remembered her as someone with a photographic memory who amazed everyone with her ability to deliver strong performances in every take.
He described her as “a tiny colossus who loved to laugh”. They shared many laughs together, and her shining face and megawatt smile were genuine – not just for the camera. That was simply who she was.
Coleman expressed that he is filled with sorrow, regret, and anger following her death. But for now, he wants to remember the extraordinary young woman who was both blessed and cursed.
“She was vulnerable. She felt everything. It made her a remarkable actor and susceptible to the heartache and thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.”
He ended his tribute with a heartfelt goodbye, saying he loves her and will miss her. He expressed sorrow that she suffered and wished she had been given the same protection she showed others. He remembered how she championed her sister Tess when she was being bullied and her commitment to animal welfare.
Hayden Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. First responders attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful. The local coroner’s office performed an autopsy and found no signs of trauma. A preliminary investigation reported no signs of foul play.
She is survived by her daughter, Kaya. The entertainment industry and fans around the world continue to mourn the loss of a talented actress who left a lasting impact through her work on Heroes, the Scream franchise, and Nashville.
