The cast of Sons of Anarchy is getting back together. FX has officially ordered a new limited series called Legends that will bring back most of the main actors from the hit biker drama. But there is a major twist — they will not be playing their famous characters from the show.

Instead, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi will all play fictional versions of themselves. The series is set more than a decade after the original show ended. The story begins when the cast reunites at a fan convention. Things take a dangerous turn when a real-world threat puts them in serious danger.

Charlie Hunnam Created the Series and Wrote the Script

Charlie Hunnam, who played Jax Teller in the original series, came up with the idea for Legends. He developed the project with Jonathan Groff (the writer, not the actor from Glee). Hunnam also wrote the script and will serve as an executive producer alongside Groff, Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn.

Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, shared his excitement about the project. He said:

“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision. Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”

Why the Cast Can’t Return as Their Original Characters

One of the biggest reasons for this creative choice is simple — most of the main characters died during the seven-season run of Sons of Anarchy. Jax Teller met his end in the series finale. Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Sagal), Bobby Munson (Mark Boone Junior), and Juice Ortiz (Theo Rossi) were also killed off. Bringing them back as their original characters would not make sense given how the show ended.

The meta approach of having the actors play themselves solves this problem. It allows the cast to reunite on screen without ignoring the events of the original series.

What Is ‘Legends’ About?

The official description of Legends gives a clear picture of what to expect:

“When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”

The series is being called a “meta-thriller”. It takes a similar approach to the 1999 film Galaxy Quest, where actors from a sci-fi show are forced to become real heroes. The difference here is that the Sons of Anarchy cast will face a danger that is more serious than anything their characters dealt with on the show.

Which Cast Members Are Returning?

The list of returning cast members includes nearly all the major players from the original series:

  • Charlie Hunnam (Jax Teller)
  • Ron Perlman (Clay Morrow)
  • Katey Sagal (Gemma Teller Morrow)
  • Maggie Siff (Dr. Tara Knowles)
  • Mark Boone Junior (Bobby Munson)
  • Tommy Flanagan (Chibs Telford)
  • Kim Coates (Tig Trager)
  • Theo Rossi (Juice Ortiz)

More cast members could be announced in the coming weeks. However, one notable name is missing — Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy, is not involved with Legends. The series is being produced by FX Productions and 20th Television.

Where and When Will ‘Legends’ Be Available?

Legends will air on FX and will also be available to stream on Hulu. As of now, there is no official release date. Filming has not started yet, so fans will likely have to wait some time before the series arrives on screens.

What Has Charlie Hunnam Been Doing Since ‘Sons of Anarchy’?

Charlie Hunnam has stayed busy since Sons of Anarchy ended in 2014. He recently received his first Emmy nomination for his role in the Netflix series Monster: The Ed Gein Story. He is also working on an adaptation of John le Carré’s novel Legacy of Spies for the BBC.

A Quick Look Back at ‘Sons of Anarchy’

Sons of Anarchy premiered on FX in 2008 and ran for seven seasons with a total of 92 episodes. The show followed Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam), a member of an outlaw motorcycle club called SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original), as he struggled with the direction of the club his father had founded.

The series became FX’s highest-rated show at the time, surpassing hits like The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me. It also spawned a successful spin-off called Mayans M.C., which ran for five seasons and ended in 2023.

Why This Reunion Is Different

Fans have been waiting for a Sons of Anarchy reunion for years. But this is not a typical revival where characters come back for more adventures. The actors are playing themselves, not the characters that made them famous. The show is also a limited series, meaning it will tell one complete story and end.

This creative decision has drawn comparisons to Galaxy Quest and even Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, where actors play exaggerated versions of themselves. It is a fresh and unexpected way to bring the cast back together.

The show’s meta twist also allows the actors to explore their real-life relationships and the bond they formed during the original series. The official description mentions a “fractured brotherhood,” hinting that the cast may have unresolved issues that come to light during the convention.

What This Means for the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Universe

Legends adds another chapter to the Sons of Anarchy universe, which already includes the spin-off Mayans M.C.. While Mayans M.C. focused on a different motorcycle club, Legends brings the focus back to the original cast. However, it does so in a completely new way that does not require viewers to remember complex plotlines from the original show.

The series is also a major milestone for Charlie Hunnam, who not only stars but also created and wrote the project. It shows his growth as a storyteller and his desire to work with his former castmates again.

What to Expect Next

With no release date announced yet, fans will have to wait for updates on production and casting. More actors from the original series could join the project in the coming months. The series will be available on FX and Hulu, making it accessible to a wide audience.

For now, the news of this reunion has already created a lot of excitement. The cast of Sons of Anarchy is riding again — just not in the way anyone expected.
