The latest episode of Apple TV+’s hit dystopian series Silo dropped on August 21, and it delivered some of the biggest answers fans have been waiting for since the show began. Titled “Gray Goo,” Season 3 Episode 8 finally revealed the real reason behind the construction of the 50 underground silos. The episode also solved the long-running mystery of who killed Orla Kent.
In the “Before Times” storyline, Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) and Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) got the full truth from Senator Thurman and Per Stensen. Their reaction to this information changed everything.

Stensen and Thurman Reveal the Silos’ True Purpose
The episode took viewers back to the past, where Helen and Daniel were forced to sign nondisclosure agreements and were taken to a dig site in Atlanta. At the site, they saw the massive digging machines being used to build the silos.

Per Stensen explained that the digger they saw was just a prototype. Nine more were being built, and each digger would create holes for five silos. This meant a total of 50 silos would be constructed. Daniel pointed out that using 50 diggers and leaving each one in the hole would save time and money. This is exactly what ended up happening.
When Charlotte asked what the silos were for, Anna simply said they were “seeds”. Helen kept pushing for a real answer. Finally, Stensen and Anna admitted the truth: the bunkers were built to preserve art, literature, and a small group of humans who would repopulate the Earth after an unavoidable apocalypse.
The Nanotech Threat and the Real Enemy
The episode also explained what caused the apocalypse. Stensen believed that an enemy nation was building a nanotech-based weapon and planning to attack the United States. Charlotte confronted him and revealed that the enemy nation was Iran.
Stensen finally admitted that when the US tried to threaten Iran, the Iranians detonated a dirty bomb. This prompted the US to send Charlotte and others as bait to destroy the Iranian nanotech facility. Even after learning she was used as bait, Charlotte agreed to join Stensen’s project as a drone pilot. However, Daniel restored a part of her memory using rosemary before she made this choice.

Helen and Daniel’s Shocking Decision
Learning the full truth changed everything for Helen and Daniel. They realized that the people running the silo project were not people they wanted to spend their lives with. Senator Thurman and Per Stensen were in charge of this plan to save humanity.
Helen and Daniel made a bold choice. They decided they would rather face the “gray goo” apocalypse than live in a bunker with people like Thurman and Stensen. They left the scene in their helicopter, choosing an uncertain death over a controlled life underground.

The Orla Kent Murder Mystery Finally Solved
In the present-day storyline, Episode 8 finally solved the mystery of who killed Orla Kent. The group initially accused Ed of the murder, believing he had plans for a secret transportation system that allowed him to steal from Supply.
But Ed revealed the truth. According to Glenda, it was Orla’s then-boyfriend Mike who killed her. Mike murdered Orla after she discovered him stealing from the Supply. Hank and Paul arrested Mike for the crime.
Knox also visited his father in prison to learn more about Harwood’s connection to Orla’s death. The conversation got intense, and Knox punched his father as payback for past abuse. Knox’s father eventually admitted that he and Harwood had been hoarding supplies, including lightbulbs. Orla saw their stash, which is why she was killed. Mike Davidson was the one who actually killed her.
Juliette’s Plan and Her Arrest
The present-day storyline also followed Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and her plan to save Silo 18. Kennedy and Lukas had made it to Silo 17, but Lukas was unconscious from a gunshot wound. Jimmy and the others helped heal him.
Kennedy went looking for the Judicial pipe that could trigger the Safeguard procedure. He and Rick found a door welded shut from the inside. Inside was the dead body of Jimmy’s mother. She had sacrificed herself to stop the poison from reaching others in Silo 17.
Jimmy was hesitant to move his mother’s body at first. But Lukas and Kennedy convinced him, and they relayed the information to Juliette in code. This would help them cap their own pipe in Silo 18.
However, thanks to Bernard’s layout, Juliette realized she had sent Shirley to the wrong pipe. She rushed to stop Shirley from capping the wrong pipe. But Camille’s raiders showed up. Juliette sacrificed herself and was arrested.

Juliette found herself in a cell with Sims. Camille arrived and told Sims he had “made his choice,” and the pair ended up arrested together.
