BTS leader RM has been indefinitely suspended from a global anti-violence organization’s list of male role models. The Pixel Project, a nonprofit that works to end violence against women, made this decision after RM and fellow BTS member J-Hope attended a Chris Brown concert in Toronto and posed for photos with the singer.
The organization said RM’s silence over the past week played a major role in their choice. They had waited for him to address the growing criticism from fans before taking action.
The Concert That Started Everything
RM and J-Hope went to a concert featuring Chris Brown and Usher on August 12, 2026, at Rogers Stadium in Toronto. The two BTS members enjoyed the show and shared videos on social media. J-Hope posted Instagram Stories showing them dancing and having a good time.
After the concert, Chris Brown shared a photo on Instagram with RM and J-Hope backstage. The picture quickly spread across social media platforms and caught the attention of BTS fans worldwide.
Many fans were not happy about this public association. Chris Brown has a long history of violence against women. In 2009, he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He pleaded guilty and received five years of probation and six months of community labor. He has also faced other allegations and legal issues involving violence over the years.
Why The Pixel Project Took Action
The Pixel Project had recognized RM in 2024 for his work on gender issues. They included him in their fifth honor roll of “16 Male Role Models Helping to Stop Violence Against Women”. The organization had praised him for trying to address his own internalized misogyny, supporting women in the arts, and speaking out about violence against women in South Korea.
In 2025, they also featured him in a Father’s Day article as an example of an “imperfect” male role model who was willing to learn and grow.
But after the concert controversy, the organization changed its position. On August 19, 2026, The Pixel Project announced RM’s indefinite suspension. They also said they would review and revise their Father’s Day 2025 article that featured him.
The organization’s statement explained their reasoning clearly:
“Effective today, we are indefinitely suspending RM from our list of male role models. The Pixel Project had been waiting for RM to issue a public statement or acknowledgement regarding the Chris Brown concert before we responded to this controversy. However, it has been a week of silence on RM’s part and that silence is deafening.”
The Pixel Project emphasized that they do not expect their male role models to be perfect. But they stressed that accountability matters when someone’s choices affect others.
“Being a decent human being also means being accountable when your choices hurt other people.”
The organization described RM and J-Hope’s decision to pose with Brown as careless. They said it ignored the wider damaging impact of publicly associating with a performer who has a history of violence.
“Intent does not always align with impact.”
They pointed out that even if RM and J-Hope did not mean to support Brown or violence against women, their fame gave Brown exposure to millions of fans. The organization also noted that BTS has a mostly female fanbase, so the members’ actions carry extra weight.
Divided Fan Reactions
The controversy has split the BTS fandom, known as ARMY. Some fans strongly criticized RM and J-Hope for attending the concert and meeting Brown. Others defended them, saying that watching a concert does not mean endorsing everything about the artist.
Supporters of RM argued that the suspension was too harsh. They said attending a concert should not be seen as supporting Brown’s past actions. Some fans also pointed out that RM has never been accused of any of the offenses associated with Brown.
On the other side, many fans welcomed the suspension. They believed RM should have known better and should have addressed the concerns publicly. These fans felt that RM’s silence made the situation worse.
The debate has also made fans look back at RM’s past statements about gender issues. Some questioned if he should have been on the role model list in the first place. Others argued that his previous advocacy should be considered separately from this one concert appearance.

The Bigger Picture
This controversy comes at an important time for BTS. All seven members have completed their mandatory military service and returned to group activities. They are currently on their “Arirang” world tour.
The Pixel Project suggested that if RM and J-Hope continue to stay silent, they should take concrete action. The organization recommended donating to local domestic violence and sexual assault shelters and hotlines in South Korea and in every city and country where the BTS tour will stop.
Neither RM nor J-Hope has publicly responded to the suspension or the backlash. BTS’s agency has also not issued a statement specifically about this controversy.
Chris Brown is currently out on bail and has a UK court trial pending in October 2026 for his latest assault charges. His history of legal problems continues to make him a controversial figure in the entertainment industry.
The Pixel Project is a volunteer-led global nonprofit that works to end violence against women. Their Celebrity Male Role Model campaign highlights men they believe can help change conversations around gender-based violence. The organization has been running this campaign for many years to raise awareness through social media and popular culture.
The debate continues online, with fans discussing whether this incident should affect RM’s reputation as a public figure. The situation shows how quickly public perception can change for global celebrities, especially when their actions seem to conflict with the values they have previously supported.
