Major Investigates the Conspiracy on Her Own
With the official machinery now focused on her, Major takes matters into her own hands. She conducts her own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the terrorist’s death. The title “BRAIN DRAIN ii” continues the story from Episode 8, which introduced deeper questions around the Puppet Master.
Ishikawa cracks a hacker’s barrier and finds phone numbers that lead to the journalist who covered Major’s case. This helps Section 9 confirm that Ghorantl is behind everything.
Meanwhile, Batou talks to his Section 6 contact about what they have discovered so far. Togusa tails Major and warns her to stay away from the Ghorantl workers. However, she ignores him, saying an old acquaintance is at the same restaurant as the Ghorantl workers, giving her an excuse to go inside.
But as she is about to enter the restaurant, she sees her friend running away. Before she can process what is happening, the building explodes. Togusa is down on the street but is actually better than expected. Major takes him to the hospital to treat some broken bones.
At night, Ishikawa infiltrates a Ghorantl base to gather more intelligence.
The Courtroom Showdown
Days later, Aramaki takes Kusanagi to court, knowing they will gather everyone after her. A prosecutor does his best to paint her as a cold-hearted killer in front of the audience. She does not deny anything he says.
When the prosecutor asks why she killed the boy, she gives a chilling response. She says the software is the only thing with value. There is no way to know whether he was actually a person, but killing him certainly freed him from his programming.
Outside the court, Kusanagi asks Aramaki how long they take to make a decision. She tells him to show her his closing arguments, but Aramaki says there is no necessity. She smiles and leaves the building. She calls Batou and tells him to prepare a full set of spare parts for her.
Kidnapping the Face Artist
As Aramaki leaves a government meeting, he gets news that Kusanagi has kidnapped a face artist. He and Katagiri from Public Security go after her.
They arrive at the location where the artist is being held. Things appear to be going well for them. However, it is actually the opposite. Everything is going according to Kusanagi’s plan. She is invisible, hiding behind the artist. When the artist reaches safety, she is there with him, alone on a plane she can easily hijack.
Aramaki, who seems to wish for Motoko’s best, lets Katagiri negotiate with her. Aramaki tells him it is better to give her what she wants. The episode ends with this tense standoff.
