HBO’s DC series Lanterns is finally returning to the story that started it all. After five episodes spent in the 2016 timeline of Rushville, Nebraska, the show is jumping back to 2026 to investigate the murder of Hal Jordan. The newly released preview for Episode 6, titled “Bad Optics,” confirms that John Stewart will begin looking into his former mentor’s death, a plot thread that has been left hanging since the series premiere.

Episode 6 of Lanterns is set to premiere on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max. The episode will be available to stream simultaneously on HBO Max at the same time it airs on the linear channel.

What the Episode 6 Preview Reveals
The preview for “Bad Optics” opens with John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre) investigating Hal Jordan’s death. A forensic pathologist states that Jordan died from a single gunshot to the head and showed no signs of fighting back. The shooter looked at him head-on when pulling the trigger.
Kerry Kane (played by Kelly Macdonald) reveals that no witnesses saw the killing. She also confirms that whoever broke Jordan’s nose likely killed him. Kane adds that Jordan returned to Rushville specifically for her.

Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is set to reappear in the episode, continuing a role he first introduced in the 2025 film Superman before bringing the character into the HBO series full time.
What Happened in Episode 5
Episode 5, titled “Lights Out,” served as a conclusion to the show’s 2016 timeline. The episode featured the town of Rushville being torn apart by Zoe, the Manhunter, and Antaan’s groups. Much of the destruction was carried out by Zoe’s space laser.
The most shocking moment of the episode came when John Stewart defeated Hal Jordan in hand-to-hand combat and took the Green Lantern ring from him. John then trapped his mentor under the debris of a destroyed motel. Zoe walked in to kill Hal Jordan, who was trapped and had no ring to protect himself.
John ultimately killed Zoe and cut out her crystallised heart as proof to the Guardians that the Manhunter was dead. He then took the ring to Lianna (played by Laura Linney) and made a surprising decision: he handed the ring back and walked away, refusing to become part of the Green Lantern Corps.
Why the 2026 Timeline Matters
The series premiere of Lanterns ended with a major twist. In the 2026 timeline, a groundskeeper found Hal Jordan frozen in the football stadium bleachers, a bullet hole in his forehead, snow in his hair, and his power ring missing from the scene.
That murder mystery was introduced in the first episode but was then set aside for nearly the entire season while the show explored the 2016 Rushville storyline. The Episode 6 preview confirms that the series is now done with the 2016 timeline and is returning to the unresolved case.
The show’s dual-timeline structure also explains why Guy Gardner is the Green Lantern protecting Earth during the events of Superman. Episode 5 revealed that John Stewart rejected the ring after the 2016 events, leaving the door open for Gardner to take on the role in the present day.
