Tom Hiddleston has confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will pick up Loki’s story exactly where the Disney+ series left off, with the God of Stories stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest crossover event. The actor has finished filming his scenes for the film, which arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026. Hiddleston says the movie will not undo the character’s growth and describes its central story as something that has never been done before in the MCU.
Hiddleston Confirms Loki’s Story Picks Up After Season 2
Loki’s journey in the MCU has been one of the longest and most changing arcs in the franchise. The character first appeared in Thor in 2011 and was later killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. A variant of Loki escaped during the events of Avengers: Endgame and went on to lead the Loki series on Disney+, which ran for two seasons and ended in 2023.
In the Loki season 2 finale, the character destroyed the TVA’s Temporal Loom, used his magic to revive dying timelines, and rearranged them into a shape resembling Yggdrasil, the Asgardian World Tree. Tom Hiddleston addressed those concerns directly. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his National Geographic docudrama Pompeii: Out of Time, the actor explained that Avengers: Doomsday begins from the exact point where the series ended.
“Loki felt like a closure. And when Marvel called about Avengers: Doomsday, it was going to be starting from that end point. So there was no sense of unstitching or undoing all of that development. That development still stands as a place to begin.”
His comments make it clear that audiences will see the healed, more powerful version of Loki who emerged at the end of the show. This Loki is no longer the scheming villain from earlier films. He is now a protector of the multiverse, and that role carries into the new movie.
Hiddleston Calls Doomsday’s Story Surprising and New
Tom Hiddleston has shared his thoughts on the script for Avengers: Doomsday in several interviews. In a cover story with British GQ, he said he had just finished filming his part in the movie. He described the central story in strong terms.
“The centre of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before.”

The setting looks like the home where Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter shared their dance at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Loki’s appearance there has led to questions about which version of the character is on screen and what mission brings him to that timeline. The trailer suggests his role involves investigating a timeline issue before Doctor Doom’s larger attack on the multiverse begins.
Loki was not featured in the first two teasers shown in theaters. One focused on Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers, and another centered on Chris Hemsworth as Thor and his adoptive daughter Love. Thor’s solo teaser suggests he has a large role in the film, which raises the chances of a reunion between the two brothers.
