Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther, recently shared how Chadwick Boseman’s death deeply affected him and Michael B. Jordan. During an April 7 appearance on The Breakfast Club, Coogler revealed that Jordan was hit the hardest by the loss of their late co-star. Boseman passed away in August 2020 at age 43 after a private battle with colon cancer .
Coogler described Boseman as “a fully baked man from the South,” referencing his upbringing in South Carolina. He added that compared to Boseman, he and Jordan “was kids” when they worked together on Black Panther . The director emphasized Boseman’s influence, calling him a mentor who taught through example rather than direct instruction.
Michael B. Jordan’s Emotional Response to Boseman’s Passing
Coogler explained that Boseman’s death had a profound effect on Jordan, more so than any other actor he had worked with. He recalled Boseman’s disciplined work ethic, noting he was always early on set and remained in character until filming wrapped. One anecdote involved a Disney executive visiting the Black Panther set and being surprised when Boseman continued speaking in his Wakandan accent. Coogler reassured the executive, saying, “Don’t be freaked out, he working man. He don’t turn it off till we wrap” .
The director also shared that he often asked Jordan, “What would Chad do in this role?” during their latest collaboration, Sinners. Boseman’s commitment to his craft left a lasting impression, pushing both Coogler and Jordan to approach their work with the same intensity .
Boseman’s Legacy in Hollywood
Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa in Black Panther made him a cultural icon. His sudden death shocked fans and colleagues alike, with many praising his professionalism and humility. Coogler highlighted how Boseman’s “old-school” demeanor and patience shaped his own approach to filmmaking.
Daniel Kaluuya, another Black Panther co-star, previously called meeting Boseman “a pivotal moment” in his life. Lupita Nyong’o also expressed lingering grief, stating she didn’t know if she’d “ever be done shedding tears” over his passing .
Upcoming Project: Sinners
Coogler and Jordan’s new film, Sinners, is set to release on April 18. The thriller stars Jordan as twin brothers who return to their hometown, only to face a greater evil. Coogler mentioned that Boseman’s influence helped them stay focused during production .
