Fifteen years after the last adventure on the Grid, Tron: Ares is arriving in theaters, bringing with it a mix of exciting new faces and one very important returning hero. Director Joachim Rønning has opened up about the unique challenges of weaving the franchise’s original star, Jeff Bridges, back into the digital world, a process he described as “rough.”

The new film follows Ares, a highly sophisticated and powerful artificial intelligence program played by Jared Leto, who is sent from the digital world into our physical reality on a dangerous mission. This event marks humanity’s first encounter with a self-aware AI. While the story pushes the universe forward, the creative team found a way to honor its past by including Bridges’ iconic character, Kevin Flynn.

Recreating the Original Grid Was a Deliberate Challenge

For director Joachim Rønning, including Jeff Bridges in the film meant more than just having the actor on set; it meant faithfully recreating the digital world from the 1982 original film for their scenes together. This presented a significant visual effects challenge, as the director insisted on authenticity over modern polish.

Rønning explained that for everyone working on the movie, especially the team at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) who handled the visual effects, there was a lot of love for the original franchise. He emphasized that when they built the original Grid for “Tron: Ares,” it was crucial that it didn’t look updated.

“So when we made the original grid in our film, it was very important for me that we didn’t polish it, that it was supposed to look as much as possible like the first film. And that’s pretty rough. I’m just saying, if you’ve seen the first film lately, it is very rough,” Rønning said.

This commitment to visual authenticity meant the VFX team had to deliberately mimic the older, more primitive computer graphics of the early 80s, a complex task with today’s advanced technology.

A New Direction with a Nod to the Past

Jeff Bridges’ return as Kevin Flynn is a key link to the franchise’s history, but he is the only legacy character from the previous films to make a comeback. The director and producers have stated this was a deliberate creative choice to steer the story in a new direction.

The film introduces a full roster of new characters, including Greta Lee as ENCOM CEO Eve Kim, Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger, and Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena, Ares’ second-in-command. Gillian Anderson also stars as Elisabeth Dillinger.

Rønning noted that story decisions are not purely creative, as actor availability also plays a role. The production team felt the new story had evolved to a point where the old characters did not need to be front and center. The goal was to honor the existing universe while boldly moving into new territory, with Bridges’ presence serving as the foundational bridge between the old and the new.

The movie’s universe expands to feature three distinct digital realms: the Dillinger Grid, the ENCOM Grid, and the iconic Legacy Grid seen in the previous sequel.

Jeff Bridges’ Personal Triumph

The return of Jeff Bridges to the Grid is notable for another reason. The acclaimed actor was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2020, revealing a 9 by 12-inch tumor in his stomach. His treatment included chemotherapy, and he also contracted COVID-19 during this period, which he later said “kicked my ass pretty good.”

During his recovery, Bridges set a personal goal: to be able to walk his daughter, Hayley, down the aisle at her wedding in July 2022. He not only achieved that goal but also danced with her at the reception. By 2024, his oncologist reported that his tumor had shrunk to the size of a marble and that his blood tests were looking good. His health journey adds a layer of real-world resilience to his return to the sci-fi franchise.

A Fresh Story for a New Generation

“Tron: Ares” acts as a sequel to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” but is designed to be a fresh entry point. The film will explore what happens when a powerful AI enters the human world, a theme the director believes has never been more relevant.

The film’s soundtrack also marks a new beginning, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, rather than Daft Punk, who created the iconic score for “Tron: Legacy.”

“Tron: Ares” is scheduled for release on October 10, 2025, in a variety of theatrical formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and RealD 3D. It is the first film in the franchise to receive a PG-13 rating.
