The second episode of Will Trent’s fourth season delivered a character-defining moment. The story forced Special Agent Will Trent to stare into an abyss and seriously consider becoming the one thing he fights against: a killer. While the immediate threat from the serial killer James Ulster has ended, the episode’s final moments make it clear that Will’s internal battle is just beginning.

The episode, titled “Love Takes Time,” picks up with Will’s team believing he was killed. They investigate a burned car with two bodies. However, Angie Polaski quickly determines the scene is staged. She notes the victim isn’t wearing Will’s medallion and the cell phone found isn’t his. Will is very much alive, but in more danger than ever.

A Major Character’s Fate Is Sealed in a Violent Confrontation

After being kidnapped by Ulster at the end of the premiere, Will manages to turn the tables. He gets the upper hand, knocks Ulster out, and puts him in the trunk of his Porsche. This is where Will faces a monumental choice. Instead of driving to GBI headquarters to turn Ulster in, he deliberately turns the car in another direction. Haunted by Ulster’s past escapes and the innocent lives lost, Will wrestles with a terrible idea: killing Ulster himself to permanently stop the violence.

Ramón Rodríguez, who plays Will, explained the complexity of this moment: “We see that there is another side of Ulster… yet we also know what he did. It’s almost like he’s one of the few people that Will has that’s connected to his mom”.

Before Will can act on his dark thoughts, a third party intervenes. A woman named Susan Barno drugs Will and frees Ulster. Played by Michaela Watkins, Susan is revealed to be one of Ulster’s many former fiancées—a corrections officer who planned his escape but turned on him out of jealousy. She takes both men hostage in a twisted scenario, forcing them to play the roles of her family in a makeshift trailer home.

The situation escalates into a violent standoff. Susan, feeling betrayed, mutilates Ulster by cutting off his finger. Meanwhile, Angie—who was briefly hospitalized for pregnancy-related cramping—disobeys her partner Seth’s wishes and tracks Will’s location to a family-owned warehouse. A shootout erupts. In a final, shocking act, Ulster steps in front of a bullet meant for Will, sacrificing himself. He dies in Will’s arms, but not before delivering a chilling, cryptic message: “See you soon”.

How Will’s Moral Choice and Ulster’s Final Words Will Haunt Him

Ulster’s death and his final words leave a deep mark. The show’s producers confirm that this event is a pivotal point for Will’s character. Daniel Thomsen, a co-showrunner, described Ulster’s face as “the beautiful face of Will’s unraveling”. He also hinted that Ulster’s presence might not be fully gone, suggesting the show could use filmmaking techniques to explore how Will is haunted.

The producers directly addressed the core question of the episode: would Will have actually killed Ulster if given the chance? Karine Rosenthal, another co-showrunner, initially said, “I don’t think so,” while Liz Heldens added, “That tension—what Will is capable of—is what we’re playing this season”. This ambiguity is the new central conflict for Will Trent.

The episode ends with a quiet but loaded scene between Will and his biological father, Caleb Roussard. Caleb senses Will is hiding the truth about what he almost did to Ulster. Instead of pressing him, Caleb offers silent understanding, accepting the impersonal statement Will offers about the world being safer. This unspoken tension sets the stage for Will’s ongoing struggle.

What’s Next for the Team After This Game-Changing Episode

While Will deals with his trauma, other characters face their own challenges. Amanda Wagner’s job security is threatened following her leave of absence. The partnership between Faith Mitchell and Michael Ormewood remains strong, highlighted by a scene with Ormewood’s children.

Angie’s relationship with Seth was tested by her decision to charge into danger while pregnant. The showrunners emphasize that Seth is not a jealous rival to Will, but a mature partner who understands Angie’s past. His concern stems from a past loss and the inherent risk of her job.

New episodes of Will Trent Season 4 air Tuesdays at 8:00 PM EST on ABC. The series is also available to stream on Hulu. The next episodes will see Will and Faith investigating a murder in the art world and later, a death at a salsa competition.
