The action-packed series starring Gabriel Basso returns for its third mission, and critics agree it is the best season yet.
Netflix has a major reason to celebrate this week. The streaming giantโs hit spy thriller The Night Agent dropped its third season on February 19, and the response from critics has been nothing short of spectacular. The new season currently holds a perfect 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated installment of the series so far .
This is a significant jump from the previous seasons. Season 1 holds a 75% critic score, while Season 2 landed at 86%. The audience score for Season 3 is also strong, sitting at 74% on the Popcornmeter . For a show that was already one of Netflixโs most-watched series, this critical approval marks a new high point.
Critics Agree This Is the Strongest Season Yet
Reviewers are praising the new episodes for tighter storytelling and better character development. Many are calling it a major improvement over the already popular second season.
Lewis Glazebrook of Screen Rant rated the season 8/10, writing, “The Night Agent season 3 is the showโs best installment yet, thanks to a tighter narrative, compelling characters, solid action, and great twists” .
Jen Vestuto from Collider also gave it 8/10 and noted, “By tightening its storytelling, deepening its characters, and delivering deliberate, hard-hitting action sequences, The Night Agent has officially delivered its strongest season yet” .
Brittany Frederick of TVBrittanyF.com graded the season an A-, stating, “Three seasons in, the Netflix version of The Night Agent has firmly established itself as one of TVโs best thriller series” . Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com added that the show is “buoyed by the best ensemble of new supporting players,” which helps make the third season the strongest .
What Happens in Season 3?
The new season picks up after the events of Season 2. Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) is still dealing with the fallout from his deal with intelligence broker Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum). Peter is now tasked with tracking down a young Treasury agent who fled to Istanbul after killing his boss. This chase leads him into a dangerous investigation of a dark money network .
According to the official synopsis, Peter must dodge paid assassins while teaming up with a dogged journalist named Isabel DeLeon, played by Genesis Rodriguez. Together, they uncover buried secrets that threaten the entire government .
Creator Shawn Ryan explained that Peter is struggling with his past choices. “I think he’s trying to figure out what kind of person he can be and whether he can maintain his moral center doing this kind of work,” Ryan told Entertainment Weekly . The season takes viewers to multiple locations, including Istanbul, Mexico City, New York, and Washington D.C., giving the conspiracy a truly global feel .
Meet the New Faces Joining the Cast
Season 3 introduces several high-profile actors to the ensemble. Jennifer Morrison, known for her roles in House and Once Upon a Time, plays First Lady Jenny Hagan. She is described as a savvy political operator and true partner to the president, but she carries a dark secret .
Stephen Moyer, famous for playing Bill Compton in True Blood, takes on the role of a contract killer known only as “The Father.” He balances his deadly work with raising his 10-year-old son, played by Callum Vinson. Ryan teased that the scenes between Peter and The Father are highlights of the entire series .
David Lyons (ER, Revolution) joins as Adam, a former spy pulled out of retirement. Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi, Homeland) plays Jay Batra, a financial analyst who uncovers something he should not have seen. Genesis Rodriguez (The Umbrella Academy) brings journalist Isabel DeLeon to life, while Michaela Watkins, Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People), and David Zayas (Dexter) round out the impressive new cast .
A Major Character Exit Explained
Fans of the show will notice one big change right away. Luciane Buchanan, who played Peter’s love interest Rose Larkin in the first two seasons, does not appear in Season 3.
Buchanan confirmed her exit in September 2025, telling Deadline: “As much as that show has been so amazing, especially for my careerโฆ The writers decided that they wanted to follow Peter and his journey based on what happened at the end of season two” . Creator Shawn Ryan has left the door open for her possible return in future seasons, but for now, Peter is flying solo .
While some critics noted that Rose’s absence is felt, most agree that the show moves forward successfully without her. David Opie of Digital Spy gave the season 4/5 and highlighted a flashback episode set in Mexico that introduces a new love story, calling it a standout chapter .
