The fourth season of Hacks took viewers on a wild ride through the high-stakes world of late-night television, only to leave its main character at her lowest point yet. After finally achieving her lifelong dream of hosting a late-night show, legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) made the shocking choice to walk away from it all. What followed was a journey across the globe, a fake death report, and the surprising reset she needed before the show’s final chapter.

The Max comedy series, which won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, delivered a season filled with professional battles, personal growth, and the complicated bond between Deborah and her young writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). The season premiered on April 10, 2025, with new episodes arriving every Thursday until the finale aired. Here is everything you need to know about what happened in season four before the fifth and final season arrives.

The Fallout from Ava’s Blackmail

When season four began, the relationship between Deborah and Ava was more broken than ever. The season three finale left off with Ava blackmailing Deborah to secure the head writer position on Deborah’s new late-night show. Ava threatened to expose Deborah’s past affair with network executive Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn) if she did not get the job.

The first two episodes showed the two women at war. Deborah tried everything to push Ava out, including planting underwear to make it look like Ava was involved with someone at the network and forcing her to take a drug test. Ava fought back with equal force, threatening again to expose the affair when Deborah tried to force her out at a party. Their public fighting got so bad that network president Winnie Landell (Helen Hunt) ordered them to work with a human resources representative who had to supervise their every interaction.

For viewers, watching these two characters who clearly cared for each other tear each other apart was difficult. But it also set up the emotional journey that would define the rest of the season. The turning point came when Deborah realized that Ava was the only writer who truly understood her comedy. During a trip to Las Vegas to hire writers, the two finally stopped fighting and started working together again.

The Late-Night Dream Comes True

After mending their relationship, Deborah and Ava focused on making the late-night show a success. The season showed the intense pressure of launching a new television program in today’s entertainment industry. The network expected huge ratings and constant growth. Every decision mattered, from hiring writers to booking guests.

The season featured guest appearances from real-life figures like country singer Shaboozey and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as guests on Deborah’s fictional show. Kaitlin Olson returned as Deborah’s daughter DJ, now a mother navigating her own life while watching her mother reach new heights of fame.

Behind the scenes, Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) continued to manage Deborah’s career while dealing with their own office chaos. Kayla hired a new assistant named Randi (Robby Hoffman), a gay ex-Hasidic Jew who brought a fresh and often confused perspective to the entertainment business.

The Controversy That Changed Everything

The season’s ninth episode, “A Slippery Slope,” brought everything crashing down. A controversy erupted when the network wanted Deborah to feature an actor on her show who faced sexual harassment allegations. Ava pushed back against having him on the program, but Deborah agreed to the network’s demands.

During the show, Deborah made a joke that angered the actor’s team. Later, Ava ran into a friend who worked for a news program and vented about the situation. The story went public, creating a major scandal for the network. Deborah was forced to fire Ava to protect the show.

But Deborah had a bigger plan. During a live taping of “Late Night,” she explained the entire situation to the audience. She defended Ava, criticized the network’s actions, and announced that she was ending her late-night show. For the first time in her career, Deborah put someone else’s well-being above her own professional ambitions.

“We wanted to give Deborah the opportunity to put someone before her career. There’s not going to be a greater moment than giving up her white whale, this dream that she’s had.” – Paul W. Downs, co-creator of Hacks

The Singapore Escape and the Non-Compete Nightmare

Deborah’s heroic moment came with a price she did not expect. Her contract included a non-compete clause that prevented her from performing anywhere as a comedian for 18 months. She could not work in America, Europe, or any English-speaking country. For a woman who lived to perform, this was devastating.

Ava tried to encourage Deborah to use the time to write new material. But Deborah needed an audience. She could not write without knowing how the jokes would land. She became depressed and isolated herself. She even visited her former manager Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins), who had left to run a solar panel warehouse, hoping to convince him to come back to work with her.

When Marty (Christopher McDonald) offered Deborah a stay at a hotel he partly owned in Hawaii, she agreed to take Ava on a vacation. But after a long flight, Ava woke up to discover they were in Singapore instead. Deborah had found a loophole. She could not perform in English, but she could perform through a translator. The translator would be the one technically performing.

In Singapore, Deborah built a new version of her Las Vegas life. She performed nightly at a casino, living in luxury and enjoying the adoration of fans who did not speak her language. Months passed. Deborah partied too much, drank too much, and stopped writing new material. She was running away from her problems instead of facing them.

Ava grew tired of watching her mentor waste away. She tried to push Deborah to return home, but Deborah refused. After a drunken argument, Deborah told Ava to leave. Ava packed her bags and planned to fly home the next morning.

The TMZ Death Hoax That Changed Everything

When Ava woke up the next day, her phone was flooded with messages and missed calls. Her manager Jimmy called frantically asking what had happened to Deborah. TMZ had reported that Deborah Vance had died.

Ava ran to Deborah’s hotel room, terrified of what she would find. She pounded on the door until Deborah finally opened it. Deborah was very much alive. A pre-written obituary had been accidentally published. It was a mistake, but it served a powerful purpose.

When Deborah read her obituary, she was offended by how it described her. The article called her a failure. It talked about her career as if it meant nothing. In that moment, Deborah realized she did not want to leave the world with that as her story. She still had time to change her legacy.

“We wanted her to see her life the way it would be remembered, and perhaps not like what they see, and still have the chance to change that. To get a second chance at writing your legacy is such a rare, incredible thing.” – Jen Statsky, co-creator of Hacks

The fake death report lit a fire under Deborah. She decided to return to the United States, fight the non-compete clause, and get back to work. She was ready to write the final chapter of her career on her own terms.

How Season 4 Sets Up the Final Season

The season four finale showed a major shift in the relationship between Deborah and Ava. After years of Deborah putting her career first, she finally made a sacrifice for someone else. After years of Ava being the student, she became the person pushing Deborah to be better.

When season five begins, Deborah will return to America with a new purpose. She plans to fight Bob Lipka’s gag order and use the publicity from her fake death to her advantage. The creators of the show, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, have said they always planned for the show to run five seasons. They know exactly how the story will end, down to the last scene of the last episode.

Production on season five is expected to begin in fall 2025. The final season will bring Deborah and Ava’s journey to a close, showing whether Deborah can finally write the legacy she wants and what her partnership with Ava will look like when the cameras stop rolling.
