The season 1 finale of The Acolyte dropped several major twists, but the biggest surprise came in a quiet moment. A shadowy figure watched from a cave as Osha (Amandla Stenberg) and Qimir (Manny Jacinto) stood together on a distant beach. That figure is Darth Plagueis, a legendary Sith Lord only mentioned before in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. This short scene changed the meaning of the entire show and set up a much darker story for a possible season 2.

Showrunner Leslye Headland confirmed this was not a random choice. Plagueis was part of her plan from the very beginning. The finale takes place around the year 132 BBY, which is roughly 100 years before the prequel movies. This timeline is key. It means the Sith are still hiding from the Jedi, following the “Rule of Two” which allows only one master and one apprentice at a time. The show reveals that Qimir is actually the apprentice of Darth Plagueis. This explains his knowledge of the dark side and his red lightsaber.

The Sith Lore That Changes Everything

For casual viewers, the name Darth Plagueis might not mean much. In the movies, Emperor Palpatine (Darth Sidious) tells Anakin Skywalker the “Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise”. Plagueis became so powerful that he could stop people from dying. He could even create life by manipulating the midi-chlorians inside living cells. He was eventually killed by his own apprentice in his sleep.

The Acolyte connects this old story to the new characters. The show introduced a coven of Force witches on the planet Brendok. These witches used their powers to create twin daughters, Mae and Osha, without a father. This act of creating life is the exact power Darth Plagueis spent his life trying to master. The finale strongly hints that the Sith Lord is watching Qimir and Osha because he wants to study how this is possible.

The show also heavily uses the Sith Code. At one point, a character repeats the line, “Peace is a lie”. This is the first line of the official Sith code, which values passion and strength over the Jedi values of serenity and peace. It confirms that Qimir is not just a rogue Jedi. He is a true believer in the Sith philosophy.

Doom for Qimir and Osha

The happy ending for Osha and Qimir is actually a tragedy if you know the lore. The final shot shows them ready to “conquer the world” together. However, Headland explained that because the Sith follow the Rule of Two, there is no room for Osha. She said the ending is a “bittersweet tragedy” because viewers know that Plagueis is already there, and “these two are doomed in some way”.

If Qimir is the apprentice of Plagueis, he has one job: to get strong enough to eventually kill his master. But Plagueis is also known to test his followers harshly. The show was setting up a power struggle where Osha might be used as a tool or a replacement. Since fans know that Plagueis survives to train Palpatine, it means Qimir likely had to die for the timeline to work. Every step Qimir and Osha took towards power brought them closer to death.

When asked about what comes next, actor Manny Jacinto said he is not sure if there will be a time jump or if they will continue right away. He mentioned needing to speak to the creator to understand the “implications” of having Plagueis as a “colleague”. He admitted he was just as shocked as the fans when he saw the creature in the cave during the finale.

The Reaction from the Galaxy

The news of Plagueis caused a major split among fans. Many were thrilled to finally see the character appear in live-action. One fan noted that even a “3 second appearance is a hell of a lot more than they needed to include,” and that it sets a precedent for other creators to use the character later. Others celebrated that the show was finally moving toward “Sith stuff” after focusing heavily on the Jedi and the witches.

However, there is deep frustration that the story might not continue. A very vocal group of fans is angry that the tease might be “meaningless” if Lucasfilm does not move forward with a second season. One fan on social media said the cancellation (if it happens) ends the plot before it could truly start. Another added, “The sith stuff was very interesting, Qimir was cool, and they chose to focus on the twins… now we probably won’t see the sith stuff for a long time.”

Others remain hopeful. Some fans point out that Lucasfilm can still tell this story through other means, such as an animated show or a different movie. “Manny Jacinto’s acting as Qimir… absolutely carried the show,” one fan argued, “so they’d be foolish to not try and repurpose some of this show to tell that story.”

The Missing Pieces We Never Got

The first season ends by answering who the master is, but it leaves dozens of questions on the table. We never learn exactly how Qimir met Plagueis. We do not know if Vernestra Rwoh, the Jedi Master who trained Qimir, knew he was falling to the dark side. The biggest missing piece is the “why.” If Plagueis can create life, why does he need the twins? Is he trying to create the perfect Sith weapon? Or is he trying to recreate the vergence in the Force that created Anakin Skywalker?

The show confirms that Qimir was once the Padawan of Master Vernestra. Jacinto described their relationship as a very strong “mother-son” bond that was “broken in a traumatic way”. A second season would have likely explored that backstory, showing how a Jedi Padawan ends up working for the most dangerous Sith Lord in the galaxy.
