The first season of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord arrived on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, with the final two episodes dropping on May the 4th (Star Wars Day). Now that all ten episodes are streaming, fans are processing the intense finale where Darth Maul finally gets what he always wantedโa true apprentice.
The show picks up right after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7. Maul survived Order 66 with help from Ahsoka Tano, who freed him as a distraction. Now he is building a criminal empire on the planet Janix while nursing his hatred for Darth Sidious, the master who used and threw him away.
Vader Shows Up And Changes Everything
The final episode brings a moment fans have talked about for years. Darth Vader walks out of the mist on Janix, and he is not there to talk. The Dark Lord of the Sith came because Maul caused too much noise.
What happens next is not a fair fight. Vader fights Maul, Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, and Padawan Devon Izara all at once. He barely breaks a sweat. At one point, Vader chokes Maul with the Force while blocking attacks from Daki with his other hand. The message is clear: Maul never had a chance.
Sam Witwer, who voices Maul, earlier explained that the show was always about Maul training Devon. “Started early in the show,” Witwer said. “He’s training [Devon]. Whether she likes it or not. We’ll see if she takes to it.”
Maul Makes A Brutal Choice To Survive
Maul only escapes because he is not alone, and because he makes a cold decision. He uses the Force to push Master Daki too close to Vader, sacrificing the Jedi so he can slip away into the shadows. Daki lands a couple of hits on Vader, but it does nothing to stop the Dark Lord.

After losing her master, Devon snaps. She gives in to her anger and rage, exactly what Maul wanted from the first episode. She attacks the Eleventh Brother without holding back. By the end, Devon agrees to become Maul’s apprentice, driven by her need for revenge against Vader and the Empire.
Dave Filoni, the creator of the series, spoke about bringing George Lucas’ original ideas to life. “Maul is a character that’s our responsibility. George and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been,” Filoni explained. “And so I felt [this series] was a way of honoring that future.”
George Lucas’ Original Plan Finally Comes To Star Wars
The finale quietly adds something big to Star Wars canon. Lucas had planned for a sequel trilogy where crime bosses took over the galaxy after the Empire fell, with Maul as the main villain. In that version, Maul had a red-skinned Twi’lek apprentice named Darth Talon. Now, Devon Izaraโa Twi’lek Padawanโfills that role, though the timeline is different.
This connection to Lucas’ vision makes the ending more meaningful for long-time fans. Maul is not just getting any apprentice. He is getting the apprentice George Lucas always wanted him to have.

Who Makes It Off Janix
Maul, Devon, and a few others escape the planet. Dryden Vos (voiced by Scott Whyte), a high-ranking member of Crimson Dawn, arrives to pull them out. In return, Maul promises to kill Crimson Dawn’s current leader and let Vos take over. But fans who remember Solo: A Star Wars Story know Maul is lying. Vos is meant to work for Maul in that film, so the promise will not go as planned.
Rylee Lawson and Two-Boots also get out, but Brander Lawson stays behind to save his son. His death is not shown on screen, leaving a small chance he could return. Most of Maul’s other allies die during the fight.

What The Ending Means For Devon
Devon’s fall to the dark side is not sudden. The whole season showed Maul pushing her, testing her, and waiting for the right moment. Every time they met, there was a lesson. Every loss she suffered was part of the training. The death of Master Daki was the final test, and she passed exactly how Maul wanted.
The show is now set up for more conflict in Season 2, which was already confirmed before the first season even premiered. Devon will train under Maul while both of them try to take down the Empire. Rylee’s fate remains unclear, and the InquisitorsโMarrok and the Eleventh Brotherโare still alive and hunting.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 is now streaming in full on Disney+ for viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India (on JioHotstar). Season 2 is expected to arrive in late 2027.
