The new anime from Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, dropped its first episode on April 4, 2026. What looks like a quiet fantasy story about twins living in a mountain village turns into something much darker. The episode runs for about 24 minutes and completely changes direction within the first few scenes. Viewers who expected a slow-building adventure got something else. Helicopters, modern weapons, and a deadly twin sister show up and destroy everything. The internet is already talking about this premiere.

The Premise: A Quiet Life That Does Not Last

Daemons of the Shadow Realm (Japanese title: Yomi no Tsugai) introduces Yuru and Asa, twin siblings living in an isolated mountain village. Yuru spends his days hunting birds and living a simple life. Asa stays locked in a cage inside the village, performing some kind of duty that no one explains to Yuru. The adults give each other secret looks. Something is clearly wrong, but Yuru does not question it. He just wants to protect his sister.

The first half of the episode builds this peaceful setting carefully. You see the stone guardians watching over the village. You see Yuru going about his daily work. The villagers treat him well. But there are hints. The adults talk about “the world below.” Someone mentions a dragon when looking at clouds in the sky. The merchant Dera brings strange items and even shamans when needed. Something is hiding under the surface of this quiet life.

The Attack That Changes Everything

Then everything falls apart. Helicopters appear in the sky. Soldiers with modern weapons drop into the medieval-looking village. The peaceful mountain home turns into a war zone in minutes. People die. Buildings burn. Yuru runs to save his sister, but he arrives too late. He finds Asa dead in her cage.

That is when the real twist happens. Another woman stands next to Asa’s body. She looks like Asa but wears an eyepatch. She says she is the real Asa. Then she announces she came to kill everyone in the village. Yuru does not understand anything. The sister he grew up with might not have been real. The person standing in front of him claims to be his actual twin, and she is a threat, not a victim.

“The anime constructs a false sense of security only to destroy everything in minutes. And when it destroys, it destroys completely. Village wiped out, characters killed without ceremony, and a protagonist who loses everything without understanding anything.” – Observatório do Cinema

Fan Reactions and Social Media Buzz

The episode became a hot topic on social media right after it aired. People compared the sudden turn to the first episode of Attack on Titan. Others said it felt like the pilot of Lost, where everything you thought you knew changes in a single moment. The IGN review called it a “must-watch anime” and praised how the episode raises questions without giving easy answers.

Some viewers felt confused by how fast things moved. There is a lot of information in 24 minutes. The daemons (called Tsugai in Japanese) appear but the show does not explain how they work. They act like the Stands from JoJo‘s Bizarre Adventure, each one connected to a user with different powers. But the episode shows the fights without giving a manual. You have to pay attention and accept that not everything will make sense right away.

The animation comes from Studio BONES, the same studio that made both Fullmetal Alchemist adaptations. The action scenes move fast and hit hard. The use of bright colors makes the violent moments stand out even more. Some viewers noted that the 3D animation in the second half does not look perfect, but those shots pass quickly and do not ruin the experience.

The Sister Twist That Changes Everything

The biggest shock of the episode involves Asa. For the first half, the story makes you think this will be a rescue mission. Yuru needs to save his trapped sister. That is a common setup. You have seen it before in many shows. But then the fake Asa dies, and the real Asa shows up wearing an eyepatch and looking nothing like the sister Yuru knew.

This changes the whole direction of the story. It is no longer about saving someone. It becomes about understanding who this dangerous person is and what happened to her. She does not arrive as a victim. She arrives as a threat. That makes the story much more interesting than a simple rescue plot.

“She doesn’t arrive as a victim. She arrives as a threat. This completely changes the dynamic of the story, it’s no longer about saving someone. It’s about understanding who, or what, this person has become.” – Observatório do Cinema

What Makes This Different From Fullmetal Alchemist

People will compare this to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. That is unavoidable. Same creator, same studio, similar character designs. Yuru even looks a bit like Edward Elric. But the tone is different. Fullmetal Alchemist built its world slowly. You learned about alchemy, the military, the homunculi, and the country of Amestris over many episodes. Daemons of the Shadow Realm does the opposite. It throws you into the deep end immediately. The world attacks the main character before you understand the rules.

Some reviewers see this as a strength. The show wants you to share Yuru‘s confusion and trauma. You are not supposed to understand everything right away. Other reviewers think the fast pace hurts the storytelling. They wanted more time with the village and the characters before the attack. But almost everyone agrees that the action looks great and the mystery setup works.

Streaming Details for Global Audiences

The episode dropped on Crunchyroll on April 4, 2026. New episodes will release every Saturday. Here is when you can watch in different regions:

  • USA (West Coast): 7:30 AM
  • UK: 3:30 PM
  • Canada (East Coast): 10:30 AM

The show is available with the original Japanese audio and subtitles in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and more. A dubbed version in English has not been announced yet but will likely come later if the show performs well.

The Manga and What Comes Next

The anime adapts the manga that started in December 2021 in Monthly Shonen Gangan. The manga has over 4 million copies in circulation as of early 2026. Hiromu Arakawa writes and draws the series herself, just like she did with Fullmetal Alchemist. The manga is still ongoing, so the anime will have more seasons if it stays popular.

The first episode only covers the beginning of the first manga volume. There is a lot more story to tell. The mysterious merchant Dera plays a bigger role later. The daemons and their powers get explained more fully. And the relationship between Yuru and the real Asa will develop in unexpected ways.
