The television world is saying goodbye to a man who helped shape some of the most beloved sitcoms of the past 40 years. David Kendall, the writer, director, and executive producer best known for his work on ‘Boy Meets World’, passed away on May 2, 2026, at the age of 68. The news was shared by the show’s original stars, who credit Kendall with not only guiding their hit series but also mentoring them as young actors.
‘We Have Lost a Vital Piece of Our Family’
The official Instagram account for the ‘Pod Meets World’ podcast broke the news. The podcast is hosted by Danielle Fishel (Topanga), Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), and Will Friedle (Eric Matthews). They posted a lengthy and touching tribute remembering Kendall as a creative force and a lifelong friend.
“To say that David Kendall was instrumental in the creation of Boy Meets World would be an understatement. He directed, wrote and executive produced our show, but also helped mold some of TV’s most memorable sitcoms, from Growing Pains to Hannah Montana.”
The trio admitted they were devastated by the loss, noting that they had all stayed in touch with Kendall regularly over the past 30 years. They described him as a mentor who helped develop their “young creative voices” both as a boss and later as a trusted advisor.
“We have lost a vital piece of our family,” the statement read. They asked fans to remember Kendall specifically while watching Seasons 2 and 3 of the show, the period when he served as the Showrunner.
Who Was David Kendall?
For fans who grew up watching Cory and Topanga, Kendall’s name might not be as famous as the actors, but his fingerprints are all over the show’s golden era. He joined ‘Boy Meets World’ as an executive producer during its second season and helped steer the series until it ended in 2000.
Kendall was responsible for some of the show’s most memorable character moments, particularly the development of Shawn Hunter’s complicated storylines. He directed 13 episodes of the series and served as a key writer during the seasons that cemented the show’s legacy as a 90s classic.
His resume, however, stretches far beyond the Matthews household. Kendall had a knack for shaping hit family comedies. His directing and producing credits include long-running favorites like ‘Growing Pains’ , ‘Hannah Montana’ , ‘Melissa & Joey’ , and ‘Big Time Rush’.
