The Yellowstone universe has introduced many memorable enemies over the years, but the new spinoff Dutton Ranch brings perhaps its most complex one yet. Five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening joins the franchise as Beulah Jackson, the cunning matriarch of a powerful Texas ranch who quickly becomes Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s biggest problem. The series premiered on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026, and fans are already talking about this new villain.
Bening recently opened up about what makes Beulah so interesting to play. She explained that the character is far from a simple bad guy.
“To try and find what is underneath all of this need for power and control, for me, is a wonderful acting challenge,” Bening said. “I love that about her, that she is this formidable person within the community, but what I hope I get to explore and what people get to see is the underbelly of this woman, who just like everybody else wants love and connection and to protect her family.”
Beulah Jackson Is A Female Version Of John Dutton
Beulah runs the 10 Petal Ranch, a property her family has owned for 190 years in the fictional South Texas town of Rio Paloma. She rules with the same iron fist that Kevin Costner’s John Dutton used in Montana. She is described as “Miss Rio Paloma herself” and an “acquired taste” by Ed Harris’ character Everett McKinney, a local vet.
The comparison to John Dutton is not accidental. Both characters share a deep need to protect their family’s legacy at any cost. Beulah’s main drive comes from wanting to please her dead father, a man “who still lives in her head,” according to Bening.
Bening does not see Beulah as a typical villain. She thinks the label would be different if the character were a man.
“If I were a man and playing this part, they probably wouldn’t use those words. He would just be seen as a person running a business and a family, trying to do his best,” Bening explained. “There’s no doubt she has problems and secrets and some of the things she does to get what she wants are morally and ethically questionable. But that’s why we make dramas and create stories.”
Beth Dutton Finally Meets Her Match In Texas
The show follows Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) after they lose their Montana ranch in a wildfire. They move to Texas to start fresh with the teenage boy Carter (Finn Little), but peace does not last long. The Jackson family immediately becomes a threat.
The trailer showed Beulah’s true nature when she said, “Rip and Beth have secrets, and people with secrets can be useful. Corruptible even.”
Bening explained that Beulah sees something familiar in Beth. She is both drawn to and scared of Beth’s strength.
“The minute she sees this woman, Beth, she is intrigued, and she is intimidated but also likes to think she has some of Beth’s qualities: That ability to strategize, that ability to protect her own and do a negotiation,” Bening said. “She admires that and is also challenged by that.”
Reilly’s performance in the original Yellowstone was one of the main reasons Bening wanted to join the show.
“They came to me and told me the story that they were intending to tell. I knew ‘Yellowstone,’ and I had watched it and I had fallen madly in love with Kelly Reilly as an actress. I just was riveted by her,” Bening shared. “You’re telling me she’s English? No way.”
A Complicated Family Dynasty
The Jackson family is full of problems that match the Duttons’ own dysfunction. Beulah’s oldest son Juaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) runs the business side of the ranch smoothly. Her younger son Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) is the ranch foreman with a drinking problem and a quick temper.
The first episode showed just how dangerous the family can be. Rob-Will murders one of his ranch hands and his brother Juaquin has to clean up the mess. Rip later finds the dead body on his new land and decides to hide it, keeping a major secret from Beth.
Beulah also has a granddaughter Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) who she wants to take over the ranch one day. But Oreana seems more interested in getting close to Carter than learning the family business.
Bening connected deeply with the family drama at the heart of the story. She said that theme is what makes shows like this work for audiences everywhere.
“I think these kinds of family dramas, if they’re good, have a mythic undertone,” Bening said. “So it’s those age-old connections that we all can relate to about fathers and daughters and sons and mothers. Certainly, Beulah wants to carry on the legacy that her father gave her.”
