Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) has officially turned 15 years old. The film hit theatres on July 15, 2011, and since then, it has become one of the most loved movies in Hindi cinema. The film’s music, composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, played a big role in its success. On this milestone, composer-singer Shankar Mahadevan opened up about creating the soundtrack, working with director Zoya Akhtar, and why the songs still connect with people after all these years.
The film’s soundtrack became more than just songs from a movie. Tracks like Senorita, Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein, and Der Lagi Lekin found their way into weddings, road trips, and personal moments. Shankar Mahadevan says the team never expected the music to go beyond the film, but it did.
Shankar Mahadevan Credits Zoya Akhtar’s Clear Vision for the Music
Shankar Mahadevan praised Zoya Akhtar for her clear ideas about what she wanted from the music. He said that working with her always starts with a fresh approach.
“Whenever we work with Zoya, it’s always a clean slate. We go back to the drawing board without any baggage because every film demands its own sound. There’s always that anxiety because it’s a new subject and the music has to be absolutely fresh and path-breaking,” said Mahadevan.
He called Akhtar a dream director because she never leaves room for confusion. “She’s crystal clear about what she wants. There are discussions, but never ambiguity. If she likes something, she likes it. If she doesn’t, she doesn’t. That makes the entire creative process simple and smooth,” he added.
The music was always meant to support the storytelling. The team did not try to make songs that would become big hits on their own. Instead, they focused on making the music fit the emotions of the characters.
“While composing, we constantly visualised Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol because each character had a distinct emotional rhythm. Our aim was never to overrule their characters; the songs had to flow seamlessly with the narrative,” Mahadevan explained.
Why the Songs Still Connect With Listeners After 15 Years
Shankar Mahadevan believes the songs from ZNMD have stayed relevant because of the right mix of melody, lyrics, and emotions.
“It’s a combination of multiple things. A good melody is a good melody—it resonates with your heart. Then you have wonderful lyrics, the emotions with which the songs have been sung and, of course, seeing the actors perform them on screen. Everything comes together. It’s like old wine; it just keeps getting better. These are songs that are going to stay forever,” he said.
He pointed out that people still play these songs at different life events. Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein is popular at weddings. Khaabon Ke Parindey is a favorite for road trips. Der Lagi Lekin speaks to people at different stages of their lives.
Among all the tracks, Khaabon Ke Parindey surprised him the most with its popularity. The song had a Bossa Nova sound, which was new for the team. “We were excited about it, but we never imagined it would receive this kind of love,” Mahadevan said.
Now, Der Lagi Lekin is the song he relates to the most. “The hero of that song is Javed Akhtar saab’s lyrics. As the years have passed, I’ve realised how relevant they are to every single human being. When I look back at our journey, I think that’s one of our biggest milestones,” he shared.
The Story Behind Abhay Deol Recording Senorita
Shankar Mahadevan also shared a fun story about how Abhay Deol ended up singing in Senorita. At first, the song was meant to be a simple situational number where the three friends join some local music in a Spanish village.
When the team started working on the track, they realized it had the potential to become a big hit. They worked hard on the hook line, and Javed Akhtar came up with the word “Senorita” during the process.
The team decided to have all three actors—Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol—sing the song. Farhan was already a singer, and Hrithik had shown his singing skills before. But Abhay was nervous.
Mahadevan used a simple trick to get Abhay to record. He asked him to come to the studio for a rehearsal. “I said, ‘Just try it out. Just have fun behind the mic. This is only a rehearsal. If it works, we’ll fix another date for the actual recording,’” Mahadevan recalled.
Abhay agreed but was not confident. He came in, and Mahadevan started recording. He told Abhay to repeat after him. Abhay thought it was just a practice session, but it was actually the final take.
When Abhay came out of the booth, Mahadevan told him the recording was done. “He said, ‘Oh, really? I mean, when do I come back for my recording?’ I said, ‘The recording is already done.’ He was very shocked and happy at the same time,” Mahadevan shared.
