The cast of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is giving fans plenty of reasons to get excited. Lauren Lapkus and Kevin Sussman recently sat down for an exclusive interview and shared that the new spin-off series packs a lot of hidden references to the original The Big Bang Theory. The show is set to debut on HBO Max on July 23, 2026, and the cast is promising that longtime viewers will spot plenty of nods to the classic sitcom.
Lapkus, who returns as Denise, told E! News that the series is filled with Easter eggs that dedicated fans will easily recognize. She also hinted that viewers can expect surprise appearances from familiar faces throughout the season. The show brings back several Big Bang Theory alumni, including Brian Posehn as Bert and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke, alongside Sussman and Lapkus.
What the Cast Says About the Easter Eggs
During their interview with E! News on July 6, Lapkus explained that the show contains many hidden details for fans of the original series. She said:
“There’s a bunch of Easter eggs within the show that I think if you’re a fan, you’ll catch all these little things.”
Sussman added that the series will finally answer a long-standing question about his character. In The Big Bang Theory, it was mentioned that Stuart lived in the basement of his comic book store. Sussman confirmed that the spin-off will finally show that space. He said:
“It’s alluded to in The Big Bang Theory that he sort of lives in the basement of his comic bookstore. But we finally get to see that space.”
He also shared his thoughts on the set design, saying:
“I think they nailed it.”
The actors also mentioned that the show will feature alternate versions of beloved characters. Sussman explained:
“The awesome thing is that there are alternate versions of these characters, and so those actors that people recognize are so good and they’re all so game and it was just a delight.”
Lapkus noted that many original cast members showed support for the new project. She said:
“I’ve spoken to a few different people who were on the show, and I think people were excited about it. I think that there was a lot of support there, which was really nice.”
The Show’s Premise and Release Details
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe follows Stuart Bloom, the comic book store owner who accidentally breaks a device created by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter. This mistake triggers a multiverse disaster that threatens all of reality. Stuart must team up with his girlfriend Denise, geologist Bert, and physicist Barry Kripke to fix the problem before it is too late.
The series is created by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn. It is the fourth show in the Big Bang Theory franchise, following Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
The show will premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 9:00 PM ET. The first season will have 10 episodes that will be released weekly. Each new episode will arrive on subsequent Thursdays. For viewers in the UK, the show will be available on Friday, July 24, 2026.
Kevin Sussman on Playing a Reluctant Hero
Sussman spoke to Deadline about his character’s journey in the new series. He explained that Stuart has always struggled to get by, and now the stakes are much higher. He said:
“He already is barely getting by in The Big Bang Theory, just trying to operate a successful comic book store, and he’s always in a state of panic. And now the circumstances match his natural state of panic. So, in a way, he’s a reluctant hero.”
The actor also shared that he never expected to lead his own spin-off. He told Deadline:
“I just want health insurance, I’ve always just wanted to work, so this was not on my bingo card; I was not expecting this.”
Lapkus expressed similar surprise about the show’s development. She said:
“I was so grateful to have joined the show at the last two seasons, it was really, really fun. Shows end, and you just move on as an actor. So, I didn’t expect it to come back around at all.”
A Different Kind of Big Bang Theory Show
Sussman has warned fans that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will feel very different from the original sitcom. He told TVLine:
“It’s not comparable to the original show. There’s no need to deal with comparisons to the original because it’s so different. It still has that Chuck Lorre DNA with the comedy, but it is definitely a different genre altogether.”
The show mixes comedy with science fiction elements, creating a new tone for the franchise. Sussman recalled how creator Chuck Lorre pitched the idea to him:
“Chuck called me into his office and said, ‘Do you know why you’re here?’ And I had no idea. He said, ‘I want to do a spin-off called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which is a multiverse-type show, and we would have some of the original characters appear, but they wouldn’t be who they were in the original show’.”

What to Expect From the Series
The show’s official description reveals that Stuart and his team will encounter alternate-universe versions of characters from The Big Bang Theory. The logline states:
“Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.”
The official trailer was released on June 23, 2026. It shows Stuart traveling through different realities, including a world inspired by The Matrix and a dystopia ruled by Barry Kripke.
The main cast includes Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom, Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert Kibbler, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke.
