Johnny Knoxville recently opened up about a frustrating discovery he made while trying to rewatch his own show, leading to a major restoration project on Paramount+.
The original Jackass seasons 1 through 3 have officially returned to the streaming service. But getting them back wasn’t just about renewing a contract. The show had to be pulled from the platform at the end of 2025 so Knoxville and the creative team could fix the episodes.
Johnny Knoxville revealed that over the last 26 years, the television episodes had been changed so much that he barely recognized them when he tried to watch last year.
“In the time since the release of Jackass 26 years ago, the television episodes had been re-edited, re-sequenced, and re-scored to the point they were unrecognizable. I found this out the hard way last year when attempting to watch them. Eeek! But kudos to Paramount for giving us the $$ to restore the shows to how they initially aired in the first place.” – Johnny Knoxville
Why the ‘Jackass’ Episodes Needed Fixing
The Jackass franchise first launched on MTV in 2000. Since that time, the episodes went through many changes. Music rights expired, so songs were replaced. Broadcast standards changed, so scenes were cut. The sequence of stunts was rearranged. All these small edits added up over two decades.
Knoxville said the episodes became a jumbled version of what the crew originally filmed. When he sat down to watch the old seasons for fun, he realized the magic was missing because the timing and soundtrack were wrong. This discovery pushed him to ask Paramount for help.
Paramount+ agreed to fund the restoration. The team went back to the original tapes and sources to rebuild the episodes exactly as they aired.

What Is Different in the Restored Seasons
The refreshed episodes now reflect the original vision from when the franchise first launched 25 years ago. This means the pranks, stunts, and music are back in their proper order.
The restored versions are currently available for Paramount+ subscribers in the United States. International regions will get access in the coming weeks. This is the definitive version of Seasons 1 through 3.
For fans who grew up watching the crew crash shopping carts and run from bulls, this restoration brings back the raw, unfiltered energy that made the show famous. The show looked like a bunch of friends grabbing a camera and making terrible decisions. That DIY spirit influenced reality TV and internet comedy for years to come.
The Timing Lines Up With the Final Movie
This restoration did not happen randomly. It arrives just ahead of the upcoming Paramount Pictures theatrical release titled Jackass: Best and Last. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
Knoxville has stated that Best and Last will be the final film in the franchise. The crew is now in their 50s, and this feels like the natural place to end things. Knoxville admitted that filming the last movie got emotional. He said he cried four times on the last day of shooting.
“This will be the last one. This is the natural place to end. So it’s going to be absolutely awful.” – Johnny Knoxville on the final film
Fans can now watch the original seasons as intended before seeing the final movie in theaters.
