Netflix’s new sci-fi series The Boroughs has viewers talking about its wild finale. The show, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews with the Duffer Brothers producing, follows a group of retirees in a desert community that hides a dark secret. Alfred Molina leads the cast as Sam Cooper, a grieving widower who discovers strange creatures attacking residents at night. By the end of season one, Sam faces off against evil town leaders Blaine Shaw (Seth Numrich) and his wife Anneliese (Alice Kremelberg), helps a trapped alien creature find peace, and gets one final moment with his dead wife. But that strange glitch in the mirror during the last scene has everyone scratching their heads.
Mother Was Not the Villain – She Was the Victim
The biggest twist in The Boroughs is that the scary creature living under the town is actually the one who needs saving. Mother, played by Nancy Daly, is a supernatural being who was found inside an egg back in 1949 by a miner named Marcus Shaw. He soon changed his name to Blaine and discovered that drinking Mother‘s blood stops aging and cures sickness. This discovery led him and his lover Anneliese to build The Boroughs right on top of Mother‘s hiding spot.
For 75 years, Blaine and Anneliese kept Mother locked up in a secret lab. They used her children, spider-like creatures, to crawl through tunnels at night and feed on residents’ spinal fluid. That fluid kept Mother alive so Blaine could keep drinking her blood to stay young forever. Mother does not experience time in a straight line like humans do. That ability let her reach into people’s minds and call for help.
Why Sam Saw His Dead Wife Lilly
Sam moves to The Boroughs after his wife Lilly (Jane Kaczmarek) dies suddenly. He is stuck in grief, always replaying the night she passed away in his arms while dancing to Bruce Springsteen‘s “Thunder Road.” Because Mother’s sense of time is fractured, she connected with Sam‘s broken mind more easily than with others. She appeared to him as Lilly, glitching like a bad TV signal, trying to tell him the truth about what was happening under the town.
The puzzle pieces Sam kept seeing were also clues from Mother. Sam and Lilly never finished their last puzzle together, and Mother used that image to grab his attention. By the end, Sam realizes it was never Lilly‘s ghost. It was Mother begging for freedom.
The Final Battle and Mother‘s Death
In the season finale, Sam and his friends free Mother from Blaine’s lab. Judy (Alfre Woodard) gets stabbed by Anneliese and nearly dies, but Mother heals her with a glowing hand. Renee (Geena Davis) and Paz (Carlos Miranda) release Mother’s children from their cages. Sam and his daughter Claire (Jena Malone) rig up old cathode-ray tube televisions to create a weapon that targets people changed by Mother‘s blood. The weapon kills Anneliese, melting her face off as Blaine watches in horror.
Sam takes Mother to a cave under the special tree where she first hatched. That is the only place she can die. Blaine follows them and attacks Sam with a rock, but when Mother finally lets go and dies surrounded by her children, the explosion kills Blaine for good. Sam survives, waking up in the rubble with Mother‘s skeleton beside him.
Mother Gave Sam One Last Gift
Just before Mother dies, she gives Sam a special thank you. He finds himself back in his old home with Lilly, alive and well. She tells him, “She’s saying thank you. Time is a gift.” They share one last dance to “Thunder Road,” and Sam finally gets to say goodbye the right way. He tells her, “We will be together again,” and she replies, “We are together always.” Then he wakes up back in the real world. That moment helps Sam move past his grief and start living again with his new friends.

What That Mirror Glitch Really Means
After the big party celebrating their victory, Sam goes to the bathroom to clean his wound. While looking in the mirror, his reflection glitches twice, just like Lilly‘s ghost used to do. This has led to many theories. The show’s creators have said they wanted to “crack the door on the story going forward” in case Netflix orders a second season. The glitch suggests that even though Mother is gone, some of her energy or power might still be inside Sam.
Some fans think Sam might have died in the explosion and is now living in an illusion created by Mother. Others believe the glitch simply shows that Sam has been permanently changed by his connection to Mother. Since Mother could bend time and reach into people’s minds, a piece of her might live on through him. As of now, Netflix has not confirmed a second season, but that final creepy moment leaves room for more stories from The Boroughs.
