The real-life crime story from Paris is heading to the big screen. A thief crew pulled off a shocking robbery at the Louvre Museum in 2025, walking away with $100 million worth of jewelry. Now, a movie is in the works to show how they did it.
The robbery took place on October 19, 2025. The thieves dressed as maintenance workers to get inside the famous museum. They broke into the Apollo Gallery and took valuable pieces, including historic French Crown Jewels.
What makes this story wild is that the stolen treasures are still missing. Police arrested several suspects. But after months of searching, the jewels have not been found.
A Famous French Director Will Make the Heist Movie
Romain Gavras is the director attached to this project. He made the 2025 Hollywood movie Sacrifice with Anya Taylor-Joy. Gavras is also known for directing music videos for big artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, and M.I.A.
The movie will be based on a new investigative book called Main basse sur le Louvre. The title means “A Grab at the Louvre.” Three journalists from French news outlets Le Parisien, Le Monde, and Paris Match wrote the book. It came out on May 27, 2026.
Production company Iconoclast bought the film rights. The rights were sold even before the book hit stores. A British producer also bought the rights to make a documentary series about the heist.
What Really Happened During the Louvre Robbery
The thieves did not use high-tech gadgets or explosions. They used a stolen basket lift and brute force. The robbery happened in the middle of the day. The crew broke display cases, grabbed the jewels, and escaped on scooters.
The stolen collection included eight important pieces. Some jewelry once belonged to Empress Eugรฉnie, who was the wife of Napoleon III. During the getaway, the empress’s crown fell to the ground. Police found it later, but it was damaged.
The robbery created a major security crisis at the museum. The director of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, lost her job in February 2026 because of what happened. Investigators found that the museum had old security systems and weak safety measures.
Why This Story Works So Well for a Movie
The heist feels like something from a film script. Thieves got past high security by pretending to be workers. They stole priceless jewels in open daylight. And the treasure is still gone.
Online, people started comparing the robbery to movies like Ocean’s Eleven and shows like Lupin. The way the thieves escaped made them seem like characters from a crime caper.
โThe theft of artworks has become a business like any other for many criminals. The criminal underworld has found a new cash cow.โ
โ Authors of the book โMain basse sur le Louvreโ
The writers of the book told AFP that the missing jewels โhas become a dense mystery, a puzzle that has plunged investigators into deep confusion.โ
