Apple TV+’s spy drama Slow Horses is making a major change for its upcoming sixth season. The show, which has followed a steady pattern since its debut, is shifting its approach in a way that has caught viewers’ attention.
For five seasons, the series adapted one Mick Herron novel per season. This formula worked well and helped the show build a loyal following. Slow Horses Season 6 will change that approach completely. The new season will combine two books from Herron’s Slough House series: Joe Country and Slough House.
Why Slow Horses Season 6 Is Adapting Two Books
The decision to adapt two novels in one season marks a shift in how the show handles its source material. Each previous season of Slow Horses focused on one book. This helped maintain a steady pace and allowed the storylines to develop naturally.
Packing two books into six episodes presents a challenge for the creative team. The writers need to fit all the key details from both novels into a shorter timeframe. This change could speed up character development and create a more action-heavy experience.
The storyline for Slow Horses Season 6 picks up with the team facing their biggest threat yet. According to Apple TV+, the season “sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.” Diana Taverner (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) was promoted to First Desk at the end of season 5. Her new position puts the Slough House team in danger.
The season 5 finale trailer gave fans a glimpse of what’s coming. The teaser shows the Slow Horses completely missing from official records. Roddy Ho (played by Christopher Chung) tells another character, “We don’t exist anymore.” This suggests the team goes into hiding after a leak exposes their identities.
Cast and Creative Team Changes for Season 6
Gary Oldman returns as the grumpy but brilliant Jackson Lamb. The full cast is expected to return, including Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, Saskia Reeves as Catherine Standish, and Jonathan Pryce as David Cartwright. Hugo Weaving will also return as Frank Harkness, the father of River Cartwright.
Two new cast members are joining for Slow Horses Season 6. Harry Lloyd, known for Game of Thrones, and Lenny Rush have signed on for roles.
Slow Horses Season 6 will have new leadership behind the scenes. Creator Will Smith stepped down as showrunner after season 5. Gaby Chiappe will take over as head writer for season 6. Ben Vanstone will run season 7. Adam Randall, who directed season 4, will return to direct the new episodes.
“It’s an amazing team. It’s an amazing cast. It’s an amazing production. It will continue to fly and keep getting better and better.” – Will Smith, creator
Christopher Chung, who plays Roddy Ho, described the action sequences in SLOW HORSES SEASON 6 as “jaw-droppingly good” in an interview with Schรถn magazine.
Ruth Bradley, who plays Emma Flyte, also mentioned the intense nature of the new season. She told Town & Country, “It’s very high-octane. It’s very tense, it’s very thriller. It’s really good.”
