The Netflix K-drama The East Palace has wrapped up its eight-episode run, and the finale has left viewers with plenty to process. The series, which blends Korean folklore, royal politics, and supernatural horror, delivered an ending that was both emotional and shocking. Nam Joo-hyuk stars as Gu Cheon, a spirit slayer who can enter the Realm of Gwi, alongside Roh Yoon-seo as Saeng Gang, a court lady who can hear the voices of the dead. The Curse That Started It All
The story begins with a tragic event from 30 years ago. A court lady, favored by the then-king, was falsely accused of having an affair with a royal guard. The queen at the time, now the Queen Dowager played by Jang Young-nam, could not tolerate her husband’s affection for a lowly maid. The court lady was executed while pregnant. Filled with anger and sadness, she swore that she would return as a won-gwi—a spirit bound to the human world by resentment—and destroy the entire royal bloodline.
After her death, all the royal princes died except one. That surviving prince grew up to become the present-day king, played by Cho Seung-woo. Now, history is repeating itself. The king’s sons are dying one by one under the same mysterious circumstances. Desperate to save his last surviving son, Prince Yeongan, the king secretly brings Gu Cheon to the palace. He gives Gu Cheon a simple choice: destroy the pond spirit or never leave the palace alive.
The Real Villain Is Not Who You Think
Throughout the series, viewers are led to believe that the pond spirit is behind the royal family’s suffering. Gu Cheon even manages to enter the Realm of Gwi and sever the resentment binding the spirit to the human world. But the deaths do not stop. Prince Yeongan dies anyway, proving that the real threat is still present.
Saeng Gang eventually discovers the horrifying truth. The person behind the murders is none other than her own grandmother, the king’s biological mother. Years ago, she used the legend of the royal curse as cover to kill every prince standing between her son and the throne. Saeng Gang’s mother was forced to help with these crimes and was later silenced to keep the secret safe.
But the killings in the present day are not the grandmother’s doing. The true culprit is the Crown Prince himself. After learning how his father became king, the Crown Prince started poisoning his own brothers to secure the throne. When the king discovered this, he killed his own son. The Crown Prince died full of hatred and became an ak-gwi—a powerful vengeful spirit that continues to kill from beyond the grave.
Gu Cheon’s Fatal Choice
The finale episode begins with Gu Cheon emerging from the pond to warn Saeng Gang that a great disaster is coming. The Crown Prince’s ak-gwi has grown stronger, and chaos is spreading throughout the palace. Gu Cheon believes the only way to stop the Crown Prince is to seal him. Saeng Gang grows increasingly worried about Gu Cheon and does not want him to risk his life.
As they prepare for the ritual, a gwi-mae tells Gu Cheon that he will die that night. Determined to protect him, Saeng Gang drugs Gu Cheon so he cannot enter the Realm of Gwi. She decides to go alone to confront her brother, the Crown Prince’s ak-gwi.
In the Realm of Gwi, Saeng Gang faces the ak-gwi alone. She manages to behead him, but he attacks her again and she is nearly killed. Meanwhile, Gu Cheon wakes up and realizes what Saeng Gang has done. He slashes his own throat to follow her into the spirit realm. There, he meets the Supreme Gwi-mae and makes a deal to obtain the weapon needed to destroy the ak-gwi.
The Final Battle
Gu Cheon arrives just in time to save Saeng Gang. He strikes the ak-gwi with the sword he received from the Supreme Gwi-mae, and an intense fight breaks out. The Crown Prince’s ak-gwi is powerful, but Gu Cheon calls out to the king, who has started a ritual to apologize to the spirits for his past actions. The spirits accept the apology, which weakens the Crown Prince’s ak-gwi.
Enraged, the ak-gwi attacks Gu Cheon once more. In the end, Gu Cheon makes a choice that costs him everything. He becomes an ak-gwi himself and gives his yang energy to Saeng Gang so she can return to the human world. Saeng Gang escapes the pond and rushes to find Gu Cheon. The series ends with Saeng Gang sitting beside Gu Cheon’s body, waiting for him to wake up.
What the Final Scene Means
The final scene of The East Palace shows Gu Cheon walking away from the palace with Saeng Gang. But the last shot reveals a spiritual chain still attached to his hand, binding him forever to the Realm of Gwi. This means that while Gu Cheon appears to be alive in the human world, he is still connected to the spirit realm. His deal with the Supreme Gwi-mae has left a permanent mark on him.
Some viewers believe this ending leaves room for a potential Season 2. The spiritual chain suggests that Gu Cheon’s story is not over. He may still be trapped between two worlds, and Saeng Gang may need to find a way to free him completely.
