The world of Anne Rice’s vampires has taken a loud and exciting turn. AMC’s hit series Interview With the Vampire has moved into a new chapter. The show is now called The Vampire Lestat. This change puts the spotlight on Lestat de Lioncourt, played by Sam Reid. The character has left behind the shadows of New Orleans and Paris. He now stands on stadium stages as a full-fledged rock star. This shift did not happen by accident. Reid and his co-star Jacob Anderson recently spoke about the real-life music legends who helped shape this new version of Lestat.
David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and Muse Inspired Lestat’s New Look
In a recent talk with RadioTimes, Reid and Anderson opened up about the rock icons who guided Lestat’s change. Reid named several big influences. He mentioned David Bowie, Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, the band Radiohead, and Muse. But one name stood above the rest. Reid called David Bowie the biggest inspiration for Lestat’s stage performances. He described Bowie as an “alien, otherworldly” figure. That otherworldly quality became the main guide for how Lestat would move and act on stage.
This is not the first time Reid has talked about Bowie’s impact. During New York Comic Con, he shared a deeper story. Reid watched rare bootleg footage of Bowie’s Cracked Actor tour. He found these videos on YouTube. Reid said the internet is “wild” for having such long-lost concerts available. That footage played a big part in shaping his version of Lestat. Reid made it clear that he was not trying to copy Bowie. He wanted to take inspiration from Bowie’s “showmanship” and commanding stage presence.
“I think Lestat moves differently to David Bowie, but just that sense of showmanship and magic and mystery is something that I look back to.”
More Rock Legends Joined the List of Inspirations
The list of influences goes beyond Bowie. Reid also looked to Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors. He mentioned Kurt Cobain as well. These artists represent different sides of rock music. Morrison brought a wild, poetic energy. Cobain brought raw emotion and a grunge attitude. Both fit different parts of Lestat’s personality.
Composer Daniel Hart also played a key role in shaping the sound. Hart created over 20 original songs for the season. He put together a special playlist for Reid and showrunner Rolin Jones. The playlist included Bowie, Radiohead, and many others. Hart said Bowie was “one of our first and biggest touchstones for Lestat”. He praised Bowie’s musicianship and his constant reinvention. Hart wanted Lestat’s music to change and grow throughout the season. The songs start with a glam rock feel. They move toward a rawer and more personal sound as the story goes on.
Jacob Anderson Called the Change ‘Insane’
Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis de Pointe du Lac, shared his own thoughts on the big change. He described the experience of turning Lestat into a modern rock star as “insane”. Anderson said this was a completely different experience after spending two seasons with his character. He talked about performing the songs live. He said it felt right for the story and made everything feel more real. Anderson admitted that acting can be scary and nerve-racking. But he loves the challenge instead of avoiding it.
Anderson has his own music background. He has released songs like “Love Is Dumb,” “Say What You Mean,” and “Aristocrats”. Reid was asked if Anderson gave him any tips for the recording studio. The finale aired on July 19. The change in name shows how big the shift is for the show. The story now comes from Lestat’s point of view. He wants to tell his side of the story through his music. This happens after Louis publishes a book that shares their history.
Showrunner Rolin Jones created the series. He is known for Friday Night Lights and The Exorcist. The cast also includes Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy, Assad Zaman as Armand, and Delainey Hayles as Claudia. The show has moved from gothic horror to a rock-and-roll odyssey. This new direction brings more sex, blood, and music. Lestat now uses his music to share vampire secrets with the world.
Real Musicians and Real Songs Made the Season Feel Authentic
The show did not fake the music. All the members of Lestat’s band are real musicians. Reid worked closely with composer Daniel Hart for months. They talked about influences and the overall sound of the show. Reid said the songs are three to five minutes long. He worked on multiple songs for each episode.
The music has found an audience beyond the show. AMC released five songs on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
