Vietnamese cinema is bringing a thought-provoking family drama to global audiences with Mr. Hero. What is Mr. Hero About?
Mr. Hero tells the story of Hung, a taxi driver and single father living in Vietnam. His young daughter is dying of liver failure, and he needs $50,000 for a liver transplant that could save her life. As a struggling working-class man, Hung does not have the money for this expensive treatment.
Desperate times lead to desperate measures. Hung hatches a risky plan with his friend Tuan (Vo Tan Phat) and neighbor Vinh (Doan The Vinh). The movie takes inspiration from a real event. In 2011, a delivery man named Nguyen Ngoc Manh caught a child falling from a 12-story window in Hanoi. He became a national hero. The Cast and Crew
Thai Hoa, often called Vietnam’s “box office king,” plays the lead role of Hung. He is one of Vietnam’s most popular actors and starred in two of the biggest box office hits of 2025, The Tunnel and Hijack 78. Hijack 78 alone drew over 2.5 million admissions in Vietnam.
The supporting cast includes Vo Tan Phat (Money Kisses), Hong Anh (Blood Moon Party), Le Thien (Goodbye Mother), and Doan The Vinh (Face Off 8: Embrace Of Light).
Behind the camera, Vo Thach Thao directed the film. She is known for directing the hit Vietnamese series Cay Tao No Hoa, which attracted over 350 million viewers during its initial release. She also co-wrote the script with Doan Hai Van.
The film is produced by Timothy Linh Bui (Sister Sister) along with Do Dinh Truong, Trinh Hoan and Tuong Vi. Production companies include Vietnam’s Happy Canvas, HK Film, V Pictures, and Singapore’s Beach House Pictures (a Fremantle company).
Worldwide Release Dates
Mr. Hero has a staggered global release schedule. The movie first came out in Vietnam in late April 2026 for the Reunification Day holidays.
For North America, the film releases on August 7, 2026. Eastern Edge Films is handling distribution in the US and Canada.
Australia and New Zealand get the movie earlier on July 23, 2026 through Infinity Entertainment. The runtime is approximately 2 hours and 2 minutes (122 minutes).
A theatrical release in Myanmar is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026 through J Cineplex.
Where to Watch Mr. Hero
Currently, Mr. Hero is available only in movie theaters. There is no streaming release date announced yet. The film will be shown with Vietnamese audio and English subtitles for international screenings.
