Zendaya‘s mother, Claire Stoermer, recently took to Instagram Stories to address the cruel comments she has been receiving online. The 62-year-old former teacher spoke out after seeing negative remarks about herself on a post celebrating her daughter’s 30th birthday.
Stoermer, who has over 120,000 followers on Instagram, posted a birthday tribute to her daughter on September 1, 2026. She shared an old childhood photo of Zendaya with a sweet message. But the next day, she returned to share something much more serious.
Claire Stoermer Reveals the Hurtful Comments She Faced
On September 3, Stoermer posted an Instagram Story showing a screenshot of a post titled “Zendaya & her mom over the years”. She admitted that she had read some of the comments left by users on that post.
“There are some terrible, horrible comments, I did read some of them. And thank goodness I don’t take that sh*t personally. Once upon a time I may have.”
She explained that if she were a younger person, those words would have hurt her deeply. Stoermer also shared why she understands people who choose to leave social media for their mental well-being.
The Four Agreements That Helped Her Cope
Stoermer mentioned a book called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. She pointed to one principle in particular: don’t take anything personally.
The four agreements are:
- Be impeccable with your word
- Don’t take anything personally
- Don’t make assumptions
- Always do your best
She wrote that the negative comments have nothing to do with her, but rather reflect the people making them.
Fans React to the News
People online were shocked to learn that Zendaya’s mother was facing this kind of treatment. On Reddit, many users shared their frustration.
One person wrote: “Imagine bullying a celeb’s mom when you could be doing ANYthing else.”
Another said: “There would be no Zendaya without this lady, how have we regressed to the point of celeb parents needing to come to Instagram with a PSA.”
A third comment read: “it’s so disgusting and gross to put people we don’t even know on a pedestal while simultaneously putting their loved ones down.”
This Is Not the First Time the Family Has Faced Trolls
Back in 2015, a Twitter user posted a picture of Zendaya’s parents and called them “ugly”. Zendaya, who was 18 at the time, responded with a powerful message. She called her parents “two of the most selfless people in the world” and even said she would pray for the person who made the comment.
Now, more than a decade later, her mother is speaking up for herself.
Zendaya Takes a Break from Social Media
Zendaya turned 30 on September 1, 2026. Her mother revealed in her birthday post that Zendaya is no longer active on social media.
The Euphoria star had hinted at this earlier in the year. During a March 2026 interview, she said: “I just hope you guys don’t get sick of me this year because I’ll tell you what—I’m disappearing for a little bit. I’m going to have to go into hiding for just a little bit.”
Zendaya has had a busy year with multiple movie releases and the third season of Euphoria. Her decision to step back from social media seems to be a choice for her own peace of mind.
