A new era for Star Trek begins this month as IDW Publishing launches its relaunched flagship comic series, simply titled Star Trek. The debut issue arrives on September 23, 2026, and it puts Seven of Nine in the captain’s chair of the USS Enterprise-G for a mission that takes the crew outside the known galaxy for the first time in franchise history. The series picks up after the events of Star Trek: Picard season 3 and is timed to celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
The Enterprise-G Finally Gets Its Own Story
The USS Enterprise-G has been a topic of interest among Star Trek fans since it was introduced in the Star Trek: Picard series finale in 2023. Originally the USS Titan-A under the command of Captain Liam Shaw, the ship was rechristened as the Enterprise-G after the Borg threat was neutralized. Seven of Nine, a character first introduced in Star Trek: Voyager, was promoted to captain and given command of the ship.
Fans had hoped for a television spin-off called Star Trek: Legacy that would follow Seven and her crew. That project never received a green light from Paramount+. Instead, the story continues in comic book form. Writer Christopher Cantwell told Syfy Wire that he has “big plans” for the vessel and that he is “amazed” Paramount Skydance gave him the greenlight to execute them.
What the New Star Trek Comic Is About
The new Star Trek series follows the Enterprise-G on a mission to relocate the dying Avuran people to a region of unknown space called the Epsilon Corridor. Three Class-M planets, known collectively as the Trinity, appear to be a perfect new home for the refugees. The crew soon discovers that the planets hold disturbing contradictions: vanished structures, strange artifacts, time skips, and signs of a presence that Starfleet’s probes never detected.
The official synopsis describes the series as a “prestige, mystery-driven, high-stakes psychological thriller” with “new worlds, new species, new existential threats.” The story is anchored by Seven, Jack Crusher, and Crash La Forge as they fight to keep the mission together while “the Galaxy’s oldest ghosts awaken”.
Cantwell said in a statement that the new series is meant to honor the past while looking forward. “There is an abundance of incredible mythos that Star Trek has given us over six decades, but with this launch we seek to shed that past even as we embrace its best qualities,” he said. “If you’ve never experienced Star Trek in your entire life, this adventure is for you. It is a clean slate; truly a strange new world full of new characters”.
The Crew of the Enterprise-G
The new comic assembles a crew with deep ties to Star Trek history. The bridge of the Enterprise-G includes:
- Captain Seven of Nine, former Borg drone and Voyager crew member, now commanding the flagship
- Lt. Sidney ‘Crash’ La Forge, daughter of Geordi La Forge
- Lt. Jack Crusher, son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher
- Commander Alexander Rozhenko, son of Worf
- Lt. Commander Lily Sato, a descendant of Hoshi Sato from Star Trek: Enterprise
The crew is described as “divided” and “fast-tracked,” which adds tension to the mission. Seven of Nine faces a difficult choice when Starfleet asks the crew to embark on a mission that could take them away from home for decades. The story explores what that kind of separation means for a ship’s crew.

Creative Team Behind the Series
Christopher Cantwell writes the series. He is an Eisner-nominated writer known for his work on Iron Man and Out of Alcatraz, as well as previous Star Trek comics including Star Trek: Defiant and Star Trek: Redshirts. Cantwell has spoken about his deep personal connection to Star Trek, saying he discovered the franchise at age 10 and that it became a “security blanket” during a difficult period in his life.
Dennis Menheere, a Ringo-nominated artist, provides the artwork. Menheere is known for Little Nightmares: Descent to Nowhere and Hello Darkness. Jodie Troutman handles lettering.
A Sister Series and the 60th Anniversary
The new Star Trek comic is part of a larger publishing plan from IDW to mark Star Trek’s 60th anniversary. A sister series called Star Trek: Zero Point launches in October 2026. That series is written by Hugo Award-winning author Charlie Jane Anders and follows Captain Raffi Musiker in command of the USS Endeavor. While the Enterprise vanishes beyond the galaxy, Musiker’s ship is tasked with preventing future disasters using a powerful artificial intelligence that wears the face of a familiar ally.
Raffi Musiker was Seven of Nine’s first officer aboard the Enterprise-G in Star Trek: Picard season 3, played by Michelle Hurd. Her move to a separate command expands the 25th-century story that began in Picard’s final season.
Release Details and Where to Find It
Star Trek #1 arrives on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The comic is available through local comic book shops, public libraries, and digital platforms including Amazon Kindle and ComiXology. Multiple variant covers are available, including art by Grummett, Menheere, and Beals.
The series is set in the 25th century of the Star Trek timeline, continuing the story that began with Star Trek: The Next Generation and continued through Star Trek: Picard. Readers who followed Picard season 3 will recognize the characters and the ship, while new readers can start fresh with this issue.
For fans who wanted to see Seven of Nine’s story continue after Picard ended, this comic delivers what the proposed Star Trek: Legacy TV series could not. The Enterprise-G is back in action, and its five-year mission has only just begun.
