Fans React to Yeonjun’s Dance Moves
TXT’s Yeonjun, who made his solo debut in September 2024, is currently facing significant online criticism due to his choreography in the TikTok challenge for his latest song, “Ggum.” Released on September 19, the track has been highly successful, topping iTunes charts in 32 regions and performing well on Japan’s Oricon and Line Music charts. It also took the top spot on Spotify in seven regions and ranked high on YouTube’s trending videos across 30 countries.
Despite the song’s success, a particular dance move from the TikTok challenge—where Yeonjun thrusts his hips to the beat—has sparked widespread debate. The controversy began when a post on the popular Korean forum TheQoo went viral, attracting over 57,000 views and prompting over 1,000 comments.
Fans Are Divided Over the Choreography
Many fans expressed discomfort with the suggestive dance move, arguing it was unnecessary and even awkward, particularly during performances with fellow idols on TikTok. Comments such as, “I really don’t like it” and “It’s uncomfortable” reflect the sentiments of a large number of netizens. Some believe the gesture doesn’t add to the overall performance and is distracting, especially when seen on televised shows like Music Bank.
Here are some of the comments from TheQoo:
- “I don’t think the first one was that bad, but the second one [with the suggestive move] was a bit awkward.”
- “Is it really that bad?”
- “I wish male idols would stop doing that suggestive dance. I really don’t like it.”
- “Ughhh.”
- “It just seems ordinary. The dance itself doesn’t look attractive or sexy at all.”
- “I was watching Music Bank the other day without thinking, and when I saw the second dance, I was seriously shocked.”
- “It’s just whatever… I think people are overreacting.”
- “The second one is really too much… It keeps drawing attention.”
- “I don’t like it. It’s uncomfortable.”
More Criticism Emerges on Pann
The debate continued on another online platform, Pann, where a similar post criticizing Yeonjun’s choreography garnered over 79,000 views. Although a few fans defended his performance, saying that his dancing is “top-tier for male idols” and praising the overall choreography, the majority of responses were negative. Many fans admitted feeling shocked by the dance moves, particularly during the TikTok challenges with his fellow TXT members.
Here’s a snapshot of some Pann comments:
- “It’s normal to dislike it, lol.”
- “I feel bad for idols who have to do that challenge.”
- “At first, I didn’t think much of the challenge when it first came out. But the one on Music Bank and the one posted yesterday… I was honestly shocked this time… Especially with Yeonjun and Soobin’s challenge… they were just way too forward…”
- “Yeonjun’s dancing is top-tier for male idols. He dances so well and brings the choreography to life. The choreography is perfectly fine, but why do people only focus on that aspect? It’s not like we’re in the Joseon era. Stop being so old-fashioned.”
- “What kind of stuff do you usually watch to think of that when you see choreography?”
- “Since Yeonjun dances so well, it didn’t look weird to me at all?”
Though Yeonjun’s dancing skills are widely acknowledged, this particular choreography has stirred strong reactions, with many netizens calling for more appropriate and less suggestive moves in future performances.
