The recently released thriller “Companion” has audiences talking about its wild and unexpected ending. Stars Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher discussed the film’s climax, revealing the behind-the-scenes details of that wine cork death scene.
A Twist Ending and a Killer Wine Opener
“Companion,” written and directed by Drew Hancock, takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride of betrayals and revenge. Thatcher plays Iris, an android who discovers her true nature and fights back against her manipulative boyfriend, Josh (Quaid). Josh’s selfish plans to frame Iris for murder and steal money from his ex’s new boyfriend, Sergey (Rupert Friend), set the stage for a dramatic showdown.
Iris, after gaining control of her own settings, unleashes her newfound intelligence and aggression. She kills Josh’s friend, Eli (Harvey Guillén), outsmarts his robot boyfriend, Patrick (Lukas Gage), who then kills Josh’s accomplice, Kat (Megan Suri). The final act of revenge involves an automatic wine opener and Josh’s temple.
“It’s one of the most creative ways I’ve ever died in something,” Quaid tells Entertainment Weekly. “That was a particularly crazy day because it was our final scene that we shot, and it was so funny to die in that way and then have everybody clap as the movie was over.”
Quaid described the scene as “cathartic” and “very cool,” adding that it would have been “anticlimactic” to end the movie any other way.
From Early Draft to Final Act
Thatcher also expressed her satisfaction with the ending, highlighting Iris’s “total self-control.” However, she admitted that filming the wine opener scene was a “blur” due to exhaustion and the late-night shoot.
The wine cork kill wasn’t always intended for Josh. Hancock revealed that in an earlier script, Iris used the wine opener on Sergey at the beginning of the movie. However, he realized that he couldn’t top that death scene and decided to save it for the climax. This change led to Sergey’s death by pocket knife, which, as Hancock pointed out, allowed for Josh’s complicity in planting the weapon on Iris.
“I was like, ‘Wait, what if I just switched it and just make [Sergey’s death] be a pocket knife?’” Hancock says. “Switching that to a pocket knife was perfect — then Jack could be complicit in the planting of the knife, so it all worked out. When you watch the movie, you can actually see the moment where he puts the pocket knife in her pocket.”
Thatcher, who has only seen the movie once, plans to rewatch it to catch this detail. “Companion” is currently in theaters.
