FX has decided not to move forward with a third season of its comedy series English Teacher, ending the show after a two-season run. The network confirmed the cancellation just over a month after the second season premiered in September 2025. The series, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, was set in an American high school and earned widespread critical praise but struggled to attract a large audience.

The Show’s Premise and Cast

“English Teacher” followed the life of Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher in Austin, Texas, navigating the complex political and social landscape of his workplace. The show focused on his professional challenges and personal life, balancing the demands of students, parents, and his own relationships.

The series featured a strong ensemble cast. Alvarez was joined by Stephanie Koenig as history teacher and Evan’s best friend, Gwen. The school faculty was rounded out by Sean Patton as gym teacher Markie, Carmen Christopher as guidance counselor Rick, and Enrico Colantoni as Principal Grant Moretti.

A Critically Beloved but Niche Series

From its debut in September 2024, “English Teacher” was a hit with television critics. The show earned a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. Its second season, which premiered in September 2025, performed even better critically, achieving a perfect 100% score on the same site.

The series also received award recognition for its freshman season, securing nominations from several major organizations. These included nominations for the Critics Choice Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards. Despite this acclaim, the show cultivated a devoted but relatively small fanbase and was not able to reach a mass audience.

A Controversy During Production

The show’s run was accompanied by off-screen challenges. In December 2024, just months after the first season debuted, Alvarez was publicly accused of sexual assault by Jon Ebeling, a former friend and co-star from Alvarez’s 2015 web series, The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. Ebeling first made the allegations on Instagram and later discussed them in a detailed article in New York Magazine.

At the time, a spokesperson for FX addressed the report, stating, โ€œWe reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the showโ€™s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.โ€ Alvarez, through his attorney, denied the claims, asserting that Ebeling’s account was inaccurate.

The allegations did not immediately impact the show’s future, as FX renewed it for a second season in February 2025. However, the controversy was widely reported, and the network’s promotion for the show’s second season was notably quieter than for its first.

How the Seasons Were Released

The release strategy for “English Teacher” changed between its first and second seasons, which may have affected its ability to build audience momentum. The show’s first season followed a traditional weekly release model, with new episodes debuting one at a time.

For its second season, which started on September 25, 2025, FX switched to a binge model. The network released all ten episodes of the season at once on Hulu on September 26, 2025. This approach contrasted with the four-month wait FX took after the Season 1 finale to announce the show’s renewal.

Unresolved Storylines Left by the Cancellation

The cancellation means several character storylines will not get a conclusion. The second season ended on a significant cliffhanger for Evan’s personal life. He returned home to a note from his partner, Malcolm, which stated that if Evan chose to teach summer school instead of joining him in Berlin, their relationship would be over.

Other plot threads were also left open. The series had been developing unspoken romantic feelings from gym teacher Markie toward history teacher Gwen. This potential relationship was complicated in the season finale when Gwen’s boyfriend, Nick, proposed to her, and she accepted.

The State of FX Programming

“English Teacher” joins other FX series that have recently concluded, such as “The Old Man” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” which both ended after their respective runs. Meanwhile, other FX originals like “The Bear,” “American Horror Story,” and the historical drama “Shลgun” have been renewed and will continue.

The series was produced by FX Productions and was executive produced by Brian Jordan Alvarez, Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, and the duo of Jake Bender & Zach Dunn. Both seasons of “English Teacher” remain available to stream on Hulu.
