The second episode of For All Mankind Season 5 brings major tension to Mars as Ed Baldwin takes a dangerous stand against the M6 nations. The episode titled “The Hard Six” dropped on April 3, 2026, on Apple TV+. It picks up right after the shocking murder arrest from the season premiere.
The M6 nations have ordered Lee Jung-Gil to return to Earth for a trial. Ed knows this means certain death for his North Korean friend. Lee spent over twenty years on Mars and helped save the American crew’s life support systems years ago. Without him, the Happy Valley colony would not exist today.
Ed decides to break every rule to keep Lee on Mars. This decision leads to a dangerous jailbreak that puts Ed’s own life on the line.
M6 Nations Force Lee’s Extradition Back to Earth
The episode opens with Lee in handcuffs being walked through the Happy Valley food court. The murder victim is Yoon Tae-Min, another North Korean man. Governor Lenya Polivanov insists on sending Lee back to Earth for trial.
Lee does not have legal residency status on Mars. North Korea got removed from the M-7 Martian nations sometime before. This means all Korean citizens on Mars have no citizenship rights. Ed understands that judicial processes on Earth can be easily rigged. Lee has a target on his back from the North Korean government.
Ed tries every legal method first. He speaks to Dev, the Helios CEO, who promises to hire the best legal team for Lee on Earth. But Dev cannot risk clashing with the M6 governments because of his Meru project. Ed then approaches Governor Polivanov directly. He asks for Lee to face trial on Mars instead. The governor refuses, showing no interest in fairness.
Officer Celia Boyd Uncovers Suspicious Koragin Operations
Officer Celia Boyd takes charge of the murder investigation. She does not believe the quick arrest tells the whole story. Boyd questions Lee’s wife Moon, who reveals that Yoon had been working nights on the Martian surface for a company called Koragin.
This work breaks multiple colony rules. Koragin does not have permission to do nighttime surface work. They also cannot hire undocumented people called “Craters.” Moon explains that Yoon received large payments and bought expensive gifts for her. This created tension between Lee and Yoon.
Boyd watches a hopper land near the space elevator at night. The cargo being unloaded does not appear on any official base manifest. When she tries to question Koragin staff, they refuse to cooperate and call security to remove her. These actions strongly suggest Koragin may have killed Yoon to protect their illegal operations.
Ed Organizes a Dangerous Jailbreak Plan
Ed gathers a small team willing to risk everything. They plan to hijack the rover and hopper during Lee’s transport. Miles backs out of the plan because of the risks and his own problems with the police. Palmer James had earlier tried to turn Miles into an informant.
The team acts during the transport window. They depressurize the cabin, knocking out Lee and the two MPK guards. One guard manages to shoot Ed’s teammate Ronnie in the back before losing consciousness. Ronnie cannot fly the hopper anymore.
Ed decides to pilot the hopper himself. Doctors had strictly told him not to fly because of his stage 3 cancer. But Ed makes an exception for his friend. Lee regains consciousness and sees Ed in the cockpit.
The Hopper Chase Ends With Ed Collapsing
Governor Polivanov sends his best team to stop the fugitives. Lee and Ed fly north toward the ISN compound. The ISN does not have an extradition treaty with the M6 nations. If Lee reaches that territory, the governor cannot send him to Earth.
Ed struggles to breathe during the flight. He coughs up blood while keeping the hopper on course. Despite his failing health, he outpaces the pursuing vehicles. Lee suits up and walks into the ISN base just as they arrive.
Officer Boyd enters the hopper after it lands. She finds Ed slumped in the pilot’s seat, not moving. Boyd checks his pulse and calls for a medic immediately. The episode ends without revealing whether Ed survives.
Discovery of Life on Titan Creates New Mission
The episode also follows a major scientific breakthrough. Helios probes on Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, detect protein synthesis. This signals possible biological activity beyond Earth.
Kelly Baldwin wants a manned mission to Titan. She argues that sending more probes will take too long. Competing companies could make the actual discovery of extraterrestrial life first. The annoying engineer Walt Griebel pushes for more robotic probes instead.
Kelly initially hides her personal excitement behind scientific arguments. A dinner conversation with Ed and her son Alex helps her admit the truth. She really wants to go to Saturn. Dev eventually sides with Kelly and names her the lead astronaut for the Titan mission.

What Happened to Yoon Tae-Min
The evidence strongly points to Koragin killing Yoon. He worked unauthorized night shifts on the surface for the company. He likely discovered their illegal shipments and unlogged cargo operations. His knowledge of these activities made him a threat.
Yoon may have tried to blackmail Koragin for better pay. The company had both the means and opportunity to commit murder. Their refusal to cooperate with Officer Boyd shows they have something to hide. Governor Polivanov’s rush to close the case by blaming Lee also raises questions.
For All Mankind Season 5 streams new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+. The season has 10 episodes total. The show will end with a sixth and final season, which begins production soon. A spin-off series called Star City arrives on May 29, 2026.
