The Spring 2026 anime season brings a new story about loneliness and the slow work of opening up. The Ramparts of Ice (also known as Koori no Jyouheki) dropped its first episode on April 2, 2026. The show comes from the manga by Agasawa Tea and is now streaming on Netflix for viewers around the world.
The series follows Koyuki Hikawa, a high school student who keeps everyone at a distance. She built a wall around herself after painful experiences in middle school. The first episode does not try to be flashy. Instead, it shows small, quiet moments that feel very real for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider.
What Happens in The Ramparts of Ice Episode 1
The episode opens by showing the world through Koyuki’s eyes. She looks at the floor. She tries to make herself smaller. She avoids eye contact with everyone around her. These are familiar habits for someone who learned that being noticed leads to trouble.
Koyuki spends her school days alone. She eats lunch by herself and keeps her head down in class. The episode explains through short flashbacks that she was bullied in middle school. Two things made her a target. She was the short, quiet girl who was easy to pick on. She also became friends with a boy that a popular girl liked. That friendship brought unwanted attention.
The bullying did not stop with mean words. The show handles these memories carefully without showing too much. But the weight of what happened is clear. Koyuki now believes that letting people in only leads to pain.
But one person refuses to leave her alone. Minato Amemiya keeps trying to talk to her. He sits near her. He says hello. He does not seem to care that she ignores him. For reasons Koyuki cannot understand, he keeps closing the gap between them.
The episode also introduces two other characters. Miki Azumi (called “Mickey” in the dub) is a popular girl who turns out to be Koyuki’s secret friend. They do not hang out at school, but they are clearly close. Yōta Hino is a laid-back boy who wears glasses and seems to have his own reasons for keeping people at a distance.
The first episode ends with a post-credits scene that hints at more painful memories involving boys who gave Koyuki unwanted attention. It makes her fear of getting close to Minato make sense.
Critics have praised how real the show feels. Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network wrote:
“There’s a lot this episode gets right about being in her position. The opening scenes, where we just see through her eyes as she looks at the ground or tries to shrink away from other people, are visceral. Koyuki’s trajectory is so familiar, her coping mechanisms basically industry standard for bullied kids trying to avoid human contact.”
The episode has received a community score of 2.8 out of 5 on Anime News Network. Some viewers find the heavy tone difficult to watch. Others appreciate how honestly it shows the effects of bullying.
