The Scrubs revival has been airing for several weeks now, and fans are finally getting answers about what happened to their favorite doctors from Sacred Heart. One of the biggest questions surrounded Dr. Perry Cox, played by John C. McGinley. After a worrying exit in the first episode, the character made a powerful return in episode 8, titled “My Odds.” Now, McGinley is sharing his honest thoughts on how the new season managed to keep the spirit of the original show alive.

John C. McGinley Gets Emotional Praising the Show’s Tone

The 66-year-old actor opened up about the difficult scenes where Dr. Cox gets diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease called microscopic polyangiitis. He admitted that filming those moments with Zach Braff (JD) and Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid) was not easy.

“Yeah, I was a mess. And that’s not the stuff you cut in, because sometimes when the actors get too upset, it deprives the audience of sharing in that arc. What’s in the episode is the stuff that still makes it accessible for the audience.”

McGinley specifically gave credit to series creator Bill Lawrence for helping find the right balance. He explained that sometimes actors want to let all their emotions out, but that can ruin the scene for the viewers.

“Sometimes you just want to put it down, and with that comes a release. But sometimes the lens suffers that as your indulgence, not ours, not the viewers. So there has to be a real deft touch in post, in edit. And I think Billy did a great job with letting the audience own that, not Cox.”

He called the recent episode “one of the best half hours of TV,” comparing its emotional weight to the classic season three episode “My Screw Up,” where Dr. Cox grieves the death of his brother-in-law played by Brendan Fraser.

Fans Feared the Worst for Dr. Cox

When the Scrubs revival first premiered on February 25, 2026, viewers were thrilled to see the old gang back. But the end of the first episode left everyone shocked. Dr. Cox told JD: “You’re not going to be working with me. You’re going to be me. This particular world has passed me by.”

After that moment, Cox disappeared from the next several episodes. Fans quickly flooded social media with worry. One person wrote on X: “Wait Dr. Cox isn’t going to be regular, or Carla? Oh, no.” Another said: “If Dr. Cox comes back to #Scrubs as a patient I will riot!!!”

The return in episode 8 confirmed the worst fear. Dr. Cox is now a patient at Sacred Heart, and JD has to take care of his former mentor. McGinley thinks this setup actually gives the writers a lot to work with. He described it as a “rich landscape for the writers” to explore in future stories.

Will Dr. Cox Play a Bigger Role in Season 2

McGinley is hopeful that if the show gets another season, Dr. Cox will be around much more. He has been busy filming another show called Rooster, which is also co-created by Bill Lawrence. But he wants the schedules to line up.

“I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, but I think, God willing, for Season 2 on both of them, schedules will line up so that Dr Cox can be around Scrubs quite a bit more.”

He also shared an interesting thought about storytelling structure. He mentioned author Joseph Campbell and the idea that a hero needs a threat. In the new season, JD is the main character again, but the show lacks some of the older characters like Ken Jenkins (Kelso) and the Janitor (Neil Flynn).

“I think Zach’s character as the hero in this three-act tale… the hero needs consequences and a threat and jeopardy. He needs a threat, he needs consequence. There has to be jeopardy, and that jeopardy is Cox, however Billy writes it.”

How to Watch the Scrubs Revival

The new season airs weekly on ABC every Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. For those who prefer streaming, new episodes become available on Hulu the next day, starting at 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET. Viewers in the UK can watch on Disney+. The season is expected to run for nine episodes total.

The revival brings back original cast members Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley. New additions include Vanessa Bayer and Joel Kim Booster joining the Sacred Heart staff.
