The streaming service Apple TV has officially joined the EGOT club. The company completed this rare achievement on Sunday night, June 7, 2026, when the Broadway musical Schmigadoon! won Best Musical at the 79th Tony Awards.
The win gives Apple TV at least one award from all four major American entertainment shows: the Emmy (television), Grammy (music), Oscar (films), and Tony (theater). The service started in November 2019 and reached this goal in roughly six and a half years.
How Schmigadoon! Made History at the Tony Awards
The stage adaptation of the Apple TV series Schmigadoon! entered the ceremony with 12 nominations, tied for the most of the night. It walked away with four wins. Along with the top prize of Best Musical, the show also won:
- Best Book of a Musical
- Best Original Score
- Best Orchestrations
The showโs creator, Cinco Paul, wrote both the book and the score. Doug Besterman and Mike Morris took home the award for Best Orchestrations.
“I think I should start by thanking Apple TV for canceling the third season of Schmigadoon the TV show because without them we couldn’t have picked it up and ran with it.” – Christine Schwarzman, producer
Lorne Michaels, the famous producer behind Saturday Night Live and one of the producers of the musical, shared a simple thought backstage. He said the show had “gone through many iterations, but I think this is the best version of it ever.”
The TV series ran for two seasons on Apple TV from 2021 to 2023. In early 2024, creator Cinco Paul confirmed that a third season had been fully written with 25 new songs, but Apple chose not to move forward with it. That cancellation paved the way for the story to find a new life on Broadway.
The Long Road to Apple TVโs EGOT Milestone
Apple TV did not win all four awards in one night. The journey started years ago. The service collected its first major award in 2020 when Billy Crudup won an Emmy for his role in The Morning Show.
Less than two years later, the film CODA won three Oscars, including the big one: Best Picture. Then, in February 2026, Apple picked up a Grammy. Chris Stapleton won Best Country Solo Performance for his song “Bad As I Used to Be,” which appeared in the Apple film F1.
Comedy series like Ted Lasso and The Studio also added several Emmy wins to Appleโs collection over the years.
This achievement is notable because Apple TV reached EGOT status much faster than its main competitor. Netflix completed its EGOT in 2025 after winning a Tony for Stranger Things: The First Shadow. That took Netflix about 12 years from the time its original shows became eligible for Emmys. Apple did it in roughly half that time.
Other Big Winners at the 2026 Tony Awards
While Schmigadoon! took the spotlight for Best Musical, other shows also had a great night. The revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman won the most awards of any production, taking home six Tonys, including Best Revival of a Play.
Laurie Metcalf won Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in that production. It marked her third career Tony Award.
John Lithgow, at 80 years old, won Best Lead Actor in a Play for Giant. He is now the oldest man ever to win a competitive acting Tony.
The Best Play award went to Liberation by Bess Wohl. The play also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama earlier this year. Wohl is only the fourth woman to win a Best Play Tony.
Caissie Levy and Joshua Henry both won Lead Acting Tonys for the revival of Ragtime, which also won Best Revival of a Musical.
Qween Jean won Best Costume Design of a Musical for Cats: The Jellicle Ball, becoming the first openly transgender winner in Tony Award history.

What This Means for the Schmigadoon! Franchise
The stage musical features a cast that includes Alex Brightman as Josh and Sara Chase as Melissa. Ana Gasteyer, Ann Harada, and Brad Oscar are also part of the ensemble. The story follows a modern-day couple who get trapped in a magical town that lives inside a golden-age musical.
The success of the Broadway show presents an interesting situation for Apple. While the company decided to end the TV series, the story continued and reached a new audience on stage. The Tony wins bring significant prestige to the Apple brand and its original content division.
The 79th Tony Awards ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
