The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again delivered a crushing blow to fans when Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) died after being struck by glass shards during Bullseye’s attack. The character who started as an art dealer and became the true power behind the Kingpin’s throne met her end in “The Grand Design,” leaving Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) shattered and viewers reeling.
Zurer, who played Vanessa for over a decade since the original Netflix series, opened up about her character’s journey, the emotional farewell, and what her death means for the show moving forward.
How Ayelet Zurer Learned About Vanessa’s Death
The actress did not see the death coming. She received calls from showrunner Dario Scardapane and Vincent D’Onofrio while parking her car. They explained the creative decision to her directly.
“It was brutal at first, but at the same time, I really understood why they needed it to really pull all the guns and make this season explosive, and they succeeded,” Zurer said.
Every person on the creative team called her personally to explain why and how Vanessa would die. She said they were often emotional about it.
“They explained something I could understand—that they needed the ‘biggest gun’ to launch his explosion. So, yeah, I’m that gun,” she told reporters.
Vanessa’s Complete Journey from Art Dealer to Queenpin
Looking back at Vanessa’s arc, Zurer sees a complete and poetic journey. The character transformed from a woman meeting a powerful man to someone who fully embraced the criminal world.
“I really love her journey, I have to say,” Zurer explained. “I love the journey from ‘Daredevil’ the Netflix show where she’s just a person who’s meeting this man and falling in love with that extremist and saying to him that she’s intrigued by his brutality.”
The actress highlighted how Vanessa evolved in Born Again Season 1 into “the boss,” a seasoned woman running the show. In Season 2, Vanessa faces a painful truth.
“She’s realizing that she might not be enough and nothing will be enough for him, really. Power is never enough. Control is not going to be enough,” Zurer said.
The Loyalty and Truth Deal That Defined the Fisks
Zurer explained the core agreement between Wilson and Vanessa that made their relationship unique among Marvel villains.
“I also feel like the deal between them was always ‘absolute truth for loyalty,’ and they’re very loyal to each other, to a fault. That’s also what we like about them. That’s why audiences react, but they’re intrigued by him, because while they’re doing bad things. They’re also crazy in love and completely loyal, which are qualities that people relate to and want in their lives.”
This loyalty theme carried through every season. Vanessa always demanded truth from Wilson, and in return, she gave complete loyalty. That deal held until her final moments.
What the Flashback Scenes Really Mean
Episode 5 included flashbacks to when Wilson and Vanessa first met at her art gallery. But Zurer offered a different way to understand those scenes.
“We also asked ourselves: ‘Is that really what happened, or is it how she remembers it now?’ That became an interesting question. We sort of agreed that it’s not exactly how it happened—it’s more how she perceives it in retrospect,” she said.
The “Rabbit in a Snowstorm” painting has always represented their relationship to Zurer. “Something gentle and vulnerable against a storm. That’s essentially them. He’s the storm, and she’s the rabbit.”
The Emotional Goodbye Scene with Vincent D’Onofrio
Filming Vanessa’s death scene was deeply emotional for everyone on set. Zurer described it as more than just acting.
“No, I’ve seen Vincent doing these things. Sometimes it just didn’t get in the edit, but I have to say, this was a really emotional day, because it was also saying goodbye, not just to Vanessa, but also to Vanessa as a whole. To say goodbye to Vincent and Vincent to say goodbye to Ayelet. There were so many layers to the goodbye there.”
The set was very quiet that day. Everyone whispered. The moment felt special to everyone present.
D’Onofrio said that Zurer “is like a sister to me.” He added, “It was really, really difficult. Much more difficult than I imagined it would be.”
Why Vanessa’s Death Had to Happen
Showrunner Dario Scardapane explained the reasoning behind killing Vanessa. The decision connected directly to Foggy Nelson’s death in Season 1.
“If Matt’s going to lose something, Fisk is going to lose something. That fight has to consume the people closest to them. These two people’s fight had to have a lot of collateral damage,” Scardapane said.
Zurer accepted this reasoning. She recognized that serving the main characters sometimes requires supporting characters to make the ultimate sacrifice.
“Once we serve the two main characters, right? Everybody around, we’re like the stars, and then they are the sun and the moon or whatnot. If they need the sun and the moon in a certain place, they need the other stars to move in a certain way to create a storyline that creates an explosion.”
What Kingpin Becomes Without Vanessa
Zurer painted a clear picture of what comes next for Wilson Fisk. Without Vanessa’s balancing presence, he will become something far more dangerous.
“Brutal. He’s going to explode, for sure,” Zurer said. “I think in a way, subconsciously, because Vincent is playing big, and is large, and he’s also energetically big, and Vanessa is constrained. Her energy is very centered, and that together was balancing each other. So now, one power without the other to balance it is going to be explosive.”
She explained that Vanessa represented the one person who could hold Fisk back. Her death removes the final restraint on his darkest impulses.

The Real Meaning Behind Vanessa’s Death
Vanessa did not die as a helpless victim. Zurer emphasized that her character made a conscious choice.
“Once she’s sent away for protection, she makes a conscious decision. She steps in and ensures that if someone is going down, it will be her. In a way, she’s putting herself first,” Zurer explained.
The actress also pointed out the deeper tragedy of Vanessa’s realization before death. Vanessa understood that nothing would ever satisfy Wilson’s hunger for power.
“She’s never going to be enough. Nothing is going to be enough,” Zurer stated.
Could Vanessa Return in Flashbacks?
When asked about returning for future flashback scenes, Zurer left the door open. She compared it to how Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson appeared in Season 2 despite dying in the Season 1 premiere.
“I think the fans must ask for that. It comes down to that, really. But you never know,” she said.
She also noted that flashbacks are always possible in shows like this. The creative team discussed the idea, but any return would need to serve the overall story.
